Tips: Restoring Accidentally Deleted Hard Drive Data

Most computer owners will feel annoyed and stupid when the data on the hard drive, and most importantly, accidentally deleted. Anger, upset, and emotions mixed into one. Did you experience it? Actually, you don’t need to be upset, because out there there is a surefire way to restore data on the hard drive that was accidentally deleted.

There are many ways to restore accidentally deleted data. With a little time and the right tools, and careful attention, you can restore lost data with precision.

Step 1# Prepare some tools and check the condition of the hard drive

The first thing that needs to be done is to make sure that the hard drive is not physically damaged. Data loss can actually be caused by two factors: the accidental owner of the PC/laptop, and the condition of the hard drive that was damaged from the start.

Ideally, you should have an external data cable, or a connector from SATA/IDE to USB, or a USB drive enclosure (as shown in the image below) that will convert the internal hard drive into an external storage device. Why does this need to be done? Because the external hard drive connection is suspected to be faster and easier.

After changing the internal hard drive to an external, what needs to be done then is a check. Check for broken or bent connector pins, or whether certain parts of the hard drive are physically damaged. When the hard drive is physically damaged, it takes more effort to restore the data on it, something that is more complicated and cannot be done without the help of experts. But if not, then you’re in luck. We can proceed to the next step.

Step #2 Connect the hard drive to the computer and use some software

Before going any further, make sure that you have changed the internal hard drive to an external one and then connected it to another computer. But before that you need to update the anti-malware and anti-virus software installed on the computer. After updating the virus identification system on both, it’s time to install some data restoration software. And here are some recommendations that we can give.

  1. Recuva: This is a free data restoration software that is simple and easy to operate. This software is interesting. Apart from being free, it is also intended for those who are only interested in finding data and restoring selected files on the hard drive.
  2. TestDisk: This software is free, but may only be operated by those who want to struggle with the command line. TestDisk can run on Windows, OS X, and Linux platforms. This one does a great job regarding fast data restoration.
  3. ileSalvage: This one is only intended for Mac OS X users. Simply put, this one software helps data owners to restore any kind of files contained in multi-partition. What’s even more great: it is also capable of restoring data from damaged hard drives or corrupt media.

Remember that the restoration process must be carried out immediately after the data is deleted on the hard drive. This means: do not let the remaining free space (which exists after the data is deleted) is overwritten by other data. Most hard drives and OS’s have a habit of overwriting the free space that appears after old data is deleted. If the period of time between deleting files and the restoration process is long, it is less likely for you to restore the desired data. Furthermore, it would be much better to utilize a stand-alone app to restore lost data.
