8 Ways to Secure Your Gmail Account So It's Not Easily Cracked

Almost everyone certainly has an email to send files, collect school assignments, to register social media accounts and so on. Email does have a lot of benefits, but unfortunately, people rarely keep their email accounts.

They often underestimate the security of their account when they know that their email contains important assets such as messages, files and so on.

Currently, there are lots of free email services that are spread across the internet. Even so, Google mail or what is often abbreviated as gmail is the prima donna of internet users.

How to Secure Gmail Account

Well, in the following article, I will explain in as much detail as possible about how to secure your gmail account so that it is not easily broken into by irresponsible people. How to? Check out the full explanation below:

1. Use strong and hard to guess passwords

secure password

Never use your name and date of birth as a password because it is very easy to guess. Use a combination of letters and numbers, if possible with symbols as well (optional).

Make sure your password is hard to guess but easy to remember. Do not let you create a very complicated password but you do not know the password yourself. Suppose you want to change your gmail password, you can read my previous tutorial on how to easily change your gmail password.

2. Add mobile number

Adding a mobile number to your account is very important. Suppose in the future you forget your gmail password, you can reset it again via your mobile number.

Also make sure you enter an active cell phone number and your own, not someone else’s. Please read the following tutorial to add a mobile number to your account.

3. Enable 2-step verification

2-Step Verification is an additional feature provided by Google to protect user accounts. The way this feature works is almost the same as the PIN token for internet banking transactions.

Usually when you log in, just enter your email address and password, right? Now if you activate this feature, when you enter your email address and password, Google needs to verify it first by sending a code via SMS (most commonly) or via a phone call. More details to activate this feature, you can read the tutorial here.

4. Don’t tell anyone about your email password

Do not tell anyone

The fourth is, never tell your gmail password to anyone. Passwords are sensitive and in my personal opinion, passwords are included in user privacy.

Suppose you tell your gmail password to person A and in the future your gmail account is hacked, who do you want to blame? Drain? Not necessarily the one who did it. Instead of bad things happening in the future, it’s better not to tell your gmail password to anyone. You don’t want important files and emails on your account to be at stake, do you?

5. Don’t forget to log out

Negligence like this is often done by most people. After they log in to their gmail account, they rarely log out. If you do it on your own laptop or PC, it’s still better (although it’s still risky), if you do this at an internet cafe or your friend’s laptop, things can get complicated.

So after you finish using your gmail account, immediately log out (even on your own laptop or PC) to minimize unwanted things.

6. Do not save your password in the browser

When you log in, whether it’s gmail, facebook, twitter and similar sites, you will often get notifications from your browser asking whether you want to save your password or not. And the danger is, anyone (even ordinary people) can see your passwords stored in the browser. More or less it looks like the image below:

save password in browser

Suppose you choose Save, automatically your gmail password will be saved in the browser. Do not believe? Here’s how to view saved passwords in the browser:

1. Here I give an example using the Mozilla Firefox browser. I assume you have chosen Save like in the picture above. After that, click the menu icon then select Options.

select Options on the menu

2. Next select Saved Logins.

3. Select Show Passwords then select Yes.

4. You can see it for yourself, the password you enter is stored and can be seen clearly along with the username / email.

passwords are clearly visible

As you can see, neglecting to save passwords in the browser can be dangerous. Only in the way I described above, even ordinary people can even see your gmail password stored in the browser. Therefore, never save your password in the browser.

7. Be careful with phishing pages

What is phishing? Phishing is a method used by hackers to steal victim data (passwords, usernames, emails, etc.) by using a fake login page that is 100% similar to the original page.

Usually hackers use url addresses that are also almost similar to the original, for example, fezbuuuk.com (Imitate facebook.com). Take a look at the image below:

example of fake facebook login

At first glance the page is 100% similar to the facebook login page. But try to pay attention to the url (which I underlined). The url address is not the original facebook url (facebook.com), so suppose you enter your email and password there, your email and password will automatically be sent to the phishing site’s database, and say goodbye to your facebook account.

Therefore, you need to be careful clicking any links you find in emails, FB / BBM / WA groups and so on (especially if you are directed to the login page). So, you have to make sure it’s not phishing by looking at the URL address first.

8. Clear browsing data

You also need to delete browsing data to secure your gmail account (not only for gmail accounts). So all browsing data which includes your browsing history, download history, saved passwords, cache and cookies and so on will be deleted.

To do this, simply press the button Ctrl + Shift + Del then select Everything (for users Mozilla) and select the beginning of time (for users Google Chrome). After that check everything and select Clear Now / Clear Browsing Data.
