Semmler to be signed by Blizzard for the Overwatch League?
Blizzard Entertainment as the developer and publisher of the Overwatch games, is currently negotiating with Auguste “Semmler” Massonnat in order to obtain the services of the eSports commentator for the Overwatch League championship. Information about Semmler will be signed by Blizzard for the Overwatch League comes from an ESPN interview whose source is someone close to Semmler and Blizzard.
The ESPN source issued a statement that Semmler will be signed by Blizzard for the Overwatch League on Friday, December 8, 2021. Regarding the news, Semmler and Blizzard declined to comment.
Semmler to be signed by Blizzard for the Overwatch League
If there is an agreement between Semmler and Blizzard, then Semmler will start filling the Overwatch League regular season on January 10, 2021 and Semmler must move back to his home country, the United States. The Overwatch League preseason itself will be held on Wednesdays at Blizzard Arena, California and previously, for the past few years, Semmler lived in Stockholm.
Currently, Semmler is still active as a commentator on CSGO events. However, in the future his activeness in CSGO will decrease when he is committed to Blizzard and Overwatch. The reason is because the CSGO and Overwatch event schedules overlap with each other. The CSGO Eleague Boston Major will be held on January 19-28, which coincides with the Overwatch League.
Still according to ESPN sources, Semmler will join the Overwatch talent without being accompanied by his fellow commentators Anders Blume da Jason “Moses” O’Toole. The two colleagues will remain together to fill the CSGO event. Semmler has worked closely with his two partners on a number of CSGO events. Additionally, they run the Room on Fire site. This website contains content analysis and discussion of in-game strategy.
Anders and Jason’s absence from following in Semmler’s footsteps seemed odd at first. Moreover, Anders and Semmler are indeed the most iconic pair in each of the CSGO tournament events they comment on. Both have commented on some of CSGO’s biggest international tournaments, including the ELEAGUE Major Grand Finals broadcast on TBS.
It turns out that the current relationship between the two commentators is known to be strained. The proof is seen through Semmler’s statement and also the actions that show the estrangement of the two. In September, the two began to consistently run projects and events separately. Prior to the news that Semmler would sign Blizzard for the Overwatch League, Semmler had made it very clear that he was looking for other opportunities without Anders.
“To all the tournament organizers, if anyone is listening to this: I’m available and on my own,” Semmler said.
Semmler will join the previously joined Overwatch League talent lineup. In April, Blizzard recruited Christopher “MonteCristo” Mykles and Erik “DoA” Lonnquist, who cemented their careers in South Korea’s League of Legends and have become two of the most popular shoutcasters in the game’s history.
The rest of the Overwatch League talent lineup includes the likes of Matt “Mr X” Morello, who made his name on Call of Duty games, and Mitchell “Uber” Leslie, who previously worked for broadcaster ESL before moving to America.
The recruitment of Overwatch commentator talent likely won’t stop with Semmler. This is because there will be a lot of Overwatch matches in 2021, and the number of commentators has not met the quota.
