PUBG will change for China and in line with 'Social Values'
PUBG wants to expand wider by heading to the Chinese market, but if you want to enter that market, of course there are requirements. But now after months of behind-the-scenes negotiations, developers PUBG Corp and Tencent have officially entered into a PUBG game publishing agreement in China. And that means it’s official that Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds has officially entered the game market in China, but not before changes were made to the game.
Previously PUBG may have faced worldwide popularity this year, but it’s not looking so bright in China. While the game remains popular among Chinese players, players suddenly face the prospect of a ban from the government for not being tied to Chinese social values. Banning the game in China, however, would be a major blow. China currently accounts for about 40 percent of the game’s player base, citing metrics from SteamSpy. But now that Tencent has become a PUBG Publisher in China, hopefully now gamers in China are relieved and can play in peace.
“We will do our best to serve great games to Chinese users in close cooperation with the company,” said CH Kim, CEO of PUBG Corp. “Tencent will localize and operate the game by meeting the preferences of Chinese gamers. We will also offer a different and enjoyable experience on PC. ”
However, in a statement from Tencent translated by Reuters, the gaming giant said it would go a step further and revamp Battlegrounds to be more in tune with China’s “socialist core values, traditional culture and moral code.”
And it looks like PUBG has rightly appointed its partner to work with in China, namely Tencent. Just this year Tencent, known for publishing popular mobile games like Arena of Valor, saw its market value increase to $520 billion USD, making it the first Chinese company to break $500 billion.
PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, since its early access release in March, has set records by selling over 20 million copies, making it the most-played game of all time on Steam.
