He also said that after the child was rescued and the police arrived, Gassama trembled because he was afraid of being caught as illegal immigrants from Mali who came to France. He was afraid of being arrested and deported back to his country. If deported, then his struggle to France will be in vain.

However, what Gassama feared did not happen. Instead, as an expression of gratitude, Gassama was granted French citizenship via the Citizenship Grants Program for immigrants. He was granted an exception and the process sped up. Not only that, he was also given a job as a firefighter. President Macron sees Gassama’s skills can be used effectively there.

Despite Gassama’s heroic actions, the investigation into the case of the near-death child caused grief for his parents, who was sentenced to 2 years in prison.
