Android Oreo Officially Released By Google!

After many rumors circulating about Android O which will be the latest operating system from Google, Google has finally officially introduced Android 8.0 which is named Android Oreo. This is the second time Google has used the name of a product for its new Android OS. The first is Android 4.4 KitKat which is taken from the name of the world famous chocolate brand.

To announce this Android Oreo, Google held a special event at 14th Street Park, Manhattan, New York, United States which is located opposite the Chelsea Market, where the original Nabisco factory is located which is where Oreo was first discovered. The announcement of Android Oreo also coincided with the phenomenon of a total solar eclipse in America. This moment is also the first time for Google to show off a statue of the Android mascot outside Google’s headquarters in Mountain View, California.

Previously, Google always showcased their latest Android mascot on the page of its headquarters in California, such as at the launch of Android Jelly Bean, Ice Cream Sandwich and Lollipop.

Why Android Oreo?

Director of Product Management Android Sagar Kamdar revealed the unique reason behind choosing ‘Oreo’ as the name for Android 8.0. He revealed that the decision to give the name was taken after Google saw many of its engineers snacking on Oreos during overtime.

“At Google’s microkitchens, we have Oreos everywhere. Our technicians continue to eat Oreos with their milk,” Kamdar said as quoted from the CNet page, Tuesday (22/8/2021).

Main Features of Android Oreo

Actually, at the Google I/O 2021 event which took place in May 2021, Google already revealed new features that will be on Android 8.0. But Google has re-released the mainstay features embedded in Andorid 8.0. Quoted from the official Android page, Tuesday (22/8/2021), the following are the main features of Android Oreo:

• Performance
  Android Oreo will be twice as fast in booting process. In addition, Android Oreo will also minimize background activity on applications that are rarely used.
• Autofill
  This feature, which is already available in Chrome, also comes to Android Oreo. This means that if your Chrome already has a password for Facebook or Twitter, the autofill password feature will automatically fill it in when you log-in to your social media account.
• Picture in Picture
  The feature allows users to navigate to other apps while still watching YouTube or Netflix.
• Notification Dots
  Notification Dots in the form of small dots will appear above the icons of apps that have unread notifications by the user. Tap and hold this point, a quick preview will appear in the form of speech bubbles.
• Android Install App
  Smartphone users can run new applications directly from the browser without the need to install the application.
• Smart Text Selection
  Functions that facilitate the copy paste process by applying on-device machine learning. This means you don’t have to block word by word to copy it. Google will recognize phrases and contexts and block them word by word for copy and paste. Smart Text Selection will also suggest maps in the address field or suggest phone access when viewing a series of phone numbers.
• Security
  There is Google Play Protect which is made to keep the device safe. This feature will continue to secure the device from incompatible applications by scanning more than 50 applications every day that the user has never even installed before.
• Battery saving
  Android 8.0 will reduce battery consumption so that it becomes more efficient even if the device is often used to communicate, play games, work and stream videos.
• New Emojis
  Android Oreo will also be equipped with a number of new emojis.

Smartphones that can be updated

In addition to announcing the name of the latest Android, Google also informed that Android 8.0 is already available on the Android Open Source Project. For now, Android Oreo is in the mobile carrier testing phase. This means that Pixel and Nexus 5X/6P smartphone users will still have to wait for the Oreo over the air (OTA) update to arrive on their devices, including the Nexus Player and Pixel C.

For information, before Android Oreo was officially released, the public beta version of Android O had long been available for Pixel and Nexus 5X/6P devices.
