[Review] Star War Jedi: Fallen Order - Mix of Dark Souls and Uncharted
Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order takes place between episodes 3 and 4 of the film series Star Wars. Things are going into their darkest times for the Jedi and the galaxy as well as they have to flee to hide from Order 66’s prey.
In Jedi: Fallen Order, you will play as Cal Kestis. He is a Jedi Padawan (beginner) in the continuation story of Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. In this episode the Jedi are indeed being hunted wherever they are. Somehow, Cal survives the hunt and the game begins.
But like the game in general, Cal’s identity as a Jedi is finally revealed and forced him to run to survive. At the same time, Cal tries to find out the whereabouts of the other Jedi. His journey leads Cal to meet many new friends who can help him as he explores a new galaxy.
Mix of Dark Souls and Uncharted
For those who may be familiar with the series Dark Souls, will definitely quickly understand the mechanics of this game. Jedi: Fallen Order has a mechanic similar to the series Dark Souls especially when fighting. Players must be patient when fighting boss or a large enemy to look for blind spot of the boss.
You will be given items for healing named Stim which is similar to Estus Flask from Dark Souls. Initially you only have two pieces (later will increase as the game progresses) and will be replenished when you are at the player’s place of saving the game (Save). When you rest at the Save, all the monsters you have defeated will come back to life. This mechanic is similar to the one in Dark Souls.
Honestly, I’m not a fan of the series myself Dark Souls because the game is quite difficult. But not with Jedi: Fallen Order. When it dies caused by enemy attacks, you don’t need to specifically press a certain button to retrieve your lost XP, Force, HP. It is enough to hit the enemy once, then it will all return to you without having to lose your momentum when fighting. Quite unique isn’t it?
Other than that, Jedi: Fallen Order also forces players to think about continuing the game because there will be a lot of puzzles in the game. To be honest, several times I was confused because there were no instructions on what to do. I also found this in other games, like Uncharted. In Uncharted, Drake has a user guide that makes it easier for players. But take it easy, when you are really confused, the game will give you ‘help’ even though it is not directly appointed.
Exploration, exploration and exploration
Players who play as Cal will visit many planets and many of these planets have a lot to discover. Adventure Call will be accompanied by BD-1. This little robot is very versatile. He can give Stim, be a zip-line, view maps, see tactics and so on. Together with BD-1, Cal is forced to explore each planet to the end in order to get the best items to help players continue the game.
Players will find some paths that cannot be crossed temporarily until you continue the story of the game. The reason is that sometimes the path can be opened after the player gains a new ability that can only be obtained by following progress game. I’m not going to talk much about this ability. When you feel stuck, it could be the developer’s way of telling you that you’re on the wrong path or that you haven’t gotten a new ability to unlock it.
At first I found exploration like quite a strange thing to do in Jedi: Fallen Order. But as the game progressed, I found it very interesting to visit new places when new abilities. Trivial things like Lore it could be the thing that you like the most because it gives a fairly large XP. But then again, this is something you don’t need to do if you’re not interested but where’s the fun in that?
Keep improving Cal
Like Dark Souls, you can increase the number of HP and Force characters with skill points. Each planet provides an Echo that players can use to increase the amount of Force or HP of the character. Players simply collect three pieces for each point. But from my experience when playing, this Echo is always guarded by Mid Boss which is not easy to beat or puzzle Unusual. So, prepare your time and your mental.
Feeling bored with BD-1 colors, colors Light Saber or the color of your clothes? No need to worry! You can open them all. When exploring a planet, you can find boxes containing treasures! Honestly this is my favorite. Because every time I find this box, I always hope to be able to get a new material to change the color of the Light Saber.
Conclusion
For the common people will Star Wars like me, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order can really make you interested to find out about the series Star Wars.
Mixed play styles like Uncharted (contains many puzzles) and also Dark Souls (smart to defeat the enemy) makes this game very interesting to play. You will not feel bored quickly thanks to puzzle existing or annoyed when losing continue to fight the boss for example. I’m pretty sure I probably won’t be playing this game for the next few months or even a year.
A number of puzzle from the game will make you confused and also some mini bosses can make you a little frustrated. But if you like challenges, this game is for you because all enemies can beat you (including Stormtroopers whose shots are very bad).
