eSports Most Likely to Enter the 2024 Olympics!
The implementation of the Olympics has always been the center of attention of citizens of the world. Recently, there has been a discourse to include eSports or electronic sports in the 2024 Olympics in Paris, France! This discourse was expressed by Tony Estanguet who is vice president of the Paris Olympic Committee. In an interview with the Associated Press, he confirmed that he would be discussing with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and several representatives from eSports regarding the inclusion of eSports in the Olympic event.
Estanguet believes digital competitions such as eSports must be taken as a serious sport if the Olympics are to maintain their relevance for millennials. The talk about eSports at the Olympics shows that the world is getting more and more interested in games. Since it was first held in 1982, eSports competitions have continued to experience a drastic increase in popularity. The eSports competition has also become one of the most popular events in the world, where the best teams always participate with prizes of up to millions of dollars! This proves that the hobby of playing games is not a bad thing because it can make money from playing in tournaments.
eSports at the Asian Games
Before the news about eSports being competed in the Olympics circulated, eSports had been announced beforehand to be included in the Asian Games. Alisports CEO Zhang Dazhong and OCA president Ahmad Fahad Al-Sabah have announced that eSports will be competed at the Asian Games. China’s largest internet company, Alibaba has collaborated with the Olympic Council of Asia to bring eSports to the 2021 Asian Games in Jakarta, Indonesia and the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou, China. This new branch will play four games, namely Dota 2, StarCraft II, Hearthstone, a sports-themed game that has not been determined between the FIFA and NBA series.
Alibaba through its Alisport division has invested USD 150 million for the development of eSports in the next few years. The company has also collaborated with IeSF (International e-Sports Federation), an organization that aims to make eSports a sport that is recognized worldwide. Previously, IeSF was on the organizing committee for the World Electronic Sports Games (WESC), which is a multi-game tournament with a prize pool of USD 5.5 million!
The fate of eSports in the Olympics
To become a sport that is competed in the Olympics, there are several criteria that must be met, namely having an international body that oversees, for example, FIBA in charge of basketball, FIFA for football and so on. In addition, there is also an assumption that says eSports is not 100% a sport because it does not rely entirely on the physical like other sports.
However, the program for the sports that will be competed in the 2024 Olympics will only begin to be formed in 2021. And the final decision on adding sports to be included will be final after the 2021 Olympics in Tokyo. This means that there are still about 2 years to realize eSports to enter the Olympics.
eSprt has indeed grown massively in recent years. As an illustration, the League of Legends final match, which is a popular MOBA game today, was watched by around 43 million viewers last year. And one of the other popular games, Dota 2 has also attracted a lot of people’s attention, especially in the implementation of The International 2021 in Seattle which fought for 25 million dollars!
