Is HP Gaming Relevant?

So far, the author is actually quite skeptical of smartphones with the nickname “HP Gaming”. But from year to year, this gaming smartphone continues to grow and there is always something new. But the question is, is HP gaming relevant?

– What’s the HP?

At the time of writing this article, the smartphones that have been released with the nickname “HP Gaming” are as follows: Rog Phone 5, Lenovo Legion Duel 2, Nubia RedMagic 6. With such a nickname, how does it compare to the current “normal HP”? call it the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra.

In this article the author will only talk about the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra, ROG Phone 5, & Lenovo Legion Duel 2 and will not talk much about the specifications that are brought, because it is certain that all of these phones are included in the “10 fastest phones available today”.

The author often says that in the world of gaming, game titles are more important than specifications, indeed specifications are also important but what’s the point if the specifications are high but the quality game titles are very few?

– Performance difference

Because we’re talking about “gaming cellphones” and “normal cellphones” that both use the Android operating system, it can be said that these three cellphones can devour all applications and games on the playstore with comfort, safe fps, and the highest graphics quality. So if the three cellphones can play and run all applications and games safely, what’s the difference?

Actually the most noticeable difference between “gaming HP” and “normal HP” is in the stability of the system at full load and of course features that are more specifically for gamers, such as the trigger button on the side of the body or the screen refresh rate is faster than others. .

Let’s talk about the system stability of the three cellphones, because the ROG Phone 5 and Legion Duel 2 have fans, it’s certain that at full load it will be much more stable than the Galaxy S21 Ultra. You can see the difference from the following image.

On synthetic benchmarks, it appears that the Galaxy S21 Ultra has the lowest level of stability compared to the 2 gaming phones with a very large percentage difference, which indicates that the Galaxy S21 Ultra has experienced very severe Thermal Throttling.

– What is thermal throttling?

What is Thermal Throttling?. The short and simple thing is that the SoC (or CPU/GPU) lowers the clockspeed to keep the temperature at a safe temperature. This is because Silicon is rather sensitive to temperature, and can be damaged at high temperatures. To minimize Thermal Throttling, both gaming phones have fans (ROG Phone 5 externally and Legion Duel 2 internally) to dissipate heat.

Then, what is the real impact in the real world?. If we talk in the real world, all of the above phones don’t experience thermal throttling when used like normal users, but when invited to play for a long time (such as 3-6 hours in 1 session) the framerate produced by the two gaming cellphones above is much higher compared to Galaxy S21 Ultra

– Relevant or not?

So, is HP Gaming relevant? According to the author, it is not very relevant for most people, but if you are an Esport Mobile Gamer who does use HP as a gaming medium, then the answer is: yes, quite relevant. because the author believes, people with this type when playing games he will play games for a very long time and require a higher level of system stability.

Why did I say no to most people? Because, on HP Gaming that is sacrificed, there are important things that will be useful every day. For example: the camera, the ergonomics of the phone in hand, the IP rating (all of the above phones are flagships), screen accuracy and HDR certification, and so on.
