Game Watch: Super Mario Bros. Successfully Hacked Hours Before Release
GAMEFINITY.ID, Jakarta – Game & Watch: Nintendo’s Super Mario Bros. was successfully hacked to run custom software, hours before its release. Thomas Roth, a security researcher and consultant from Germany, received Game & Watch: Super Mario Bros. the day before its November 13 release and immediately got to work tinkering with the device.
Quoted by GAMEFINITY.ID from VGC, Roth under the pseudonym StackSmashing runs a YouTube channel that features videos on how to circumvent the security of Nintendo’s previous portable consoles, including hacking the original Game Boy cartridge protection. After six hours of exploring the internal components of the new Game & Watch, Roth claims to have circumvented its security and replaced the default Super Mario Bros. ROM with modified software.
Roth claims that the process does not require soldering and says he will soon release a video detailing the entire process. Roth hasn’t revealed whether the modification will allow Game & Watch to run game ROMs other than Super Mario Bros.
Released for $49.99 (approximately $60 in the US market), Game & Watch: Super Mario Bros. featuring a modern d-pad and running the classic games Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels and special versions of the classic game Ball with Mario as a character. This portable device is also equipped with a digital clock that can play 35 different animations of Mario and his friends, in honor of the 35th anniversary of the Nintendo mascot.
Nintendo’s previous classic consoles, the NES mini and Super NES, were also quickly modified by the hacker community and were eventually able to run almost any classic game ROM. However, Roth who hacked the latest Game & Watch admits this portable device has completely different hardware from Nintendo’s previous classic consoles.
