Esports Officially Competed at the 2022 Asian Games Hangzhou

GAMEFINITY.ID, Jakarta – Esports will become a fully contested and medal-winning sport at the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games. This is a major step towards mainstream for a sport that has long harbored Olympic ambitions. Esports and breakdancing are both included in the Asian Games program in Hangzhou, China, during the general assembly of the Asian Olympic Council (OCA) in Muscat this week.

“I hope that e-sports will add value to the Asian Games, and I believe it will happen in the future, during the 2022 Asian Games and beyond,” said OCA Asian Games director Haider Farman in a statement Friday (12/18/2021) as quoted AFP.

Just a reminder, at the 2021 Jakarta Asian Games, Esports was still a demonstration event. So that medals in this branch are not included in the overall medal calculation. Meanwhile, at the 2021 Philippine SEA Games, this sport was already fighting for medals for the overall medal tally.

Efforts to include esports in the Olympics have stalled so far, but the coronavirus pandemic appears to be triggering a change this year as organizers explore new ideas. In April, International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Thomas Bach called for the movement to “immediately” examine electronic versions of the sport and approach game publishers. This month, breakdancing, skateboarding, surfing and rock climbing were approved for the 2024 Paris Olympics after the Games sought to attract a younger audience.
