Review : Gigabyte P2542 – Racing Car Inspired Gaming Notebook
Overview
In the world of computers, especially desktops, the name Gigabyte is a guarantee of quality with their PC component products which are always equipped with quality spare parts as well as more advanced features than competing brands. Well, this time the Pemmz Team will review a Gigabyte product, but not a motherboard or VGA Card, but a Notebook. Judging from the specifications, Gigabyte has included it in their Performance Gaming family. What does the Notebook have to offer with a bright panel color similar to one of the typical colors of this sports car? Let’s continue. . .

Design
The Pemmz team did not allow Disassembly on this notebook, so they could not analyze further whether the layout and components applied to the Gigabyte P2542 received the same focus as the motherboard products. What is known for certain, the build material as well as the finishing of this gaming notebook for Rp. 16,269,000 is among the best, plus the chrome list on the edges makes it look elegant.
What Pemmz loves about this notebook is the design of the port area that protrudes into. Until at the beginning of use, we had to lift the side of this notebook to make sure whether the device to be connected was right to the destination port. After that, it’s enough to feel it even though it takes a little longer.
The Workstation area is made entirely black, with chrome accents on the buttons and LCD hinges. The keyboard applies a chiklet model with a large enough key size, suitable for all finger sizes. Turning to the touchpad area, the Gigabyte P2542 adds a texture that makes users feel their fingers are really attached to the touchpad surface. You can also use multi gesture and scroll functions when choosing to use a touchpad instead of an external mouse.
What is different, generally the specification label is on the right palm res and the sticker area from the component vendor is on the left. But on P2542, the position is reversed. also the activity indicator LED is placed in the palm rest area at the far right. This makes it easier to monitor than to be placed in the front bay like most notebooks today. There is a dedicated key to directly access the volume and Smart Manager features. Smart Manager itself is a collection of tools for activating features or connections on this notebook.

Features & Connectivity
In terms of features and connectivity, the Gigabyte P2542 does not seem to offer anything special. All seem common like most notebooks. It’s just the placement that Pemmz feels is more optimized. The display area that has adopted the anti-glare type is a plus that is mandatory on a high-end notebook.
Audio
The Gigabyte P2542 is equipped with a 4.1 speaker configuration which is very rare in high-end notebooks though. If only more advanced settings were added to the audio manager, the sound produced would be more varied.
Well, what is typical of gigabyte gaming notebooks is the design of the battery casing that is made in synergy with the exhaust hole, like a sports car racing exhaust. If the battery is installed, the position of the back of the notebook will rise to provide extra room for air in and out. Good Design.
Performance
With the same specs, the 3DMark 06 P2542 Score is about 5% less than the ASUS G46VW.
For the record CPU score on the 3D Mark Vantage with the same configuration using the GTX660M, it is still held by Xenom NP6370 with a score of 33657
In 3DMark 11 which is based on testing on directX11, the performance of the GTX660M must be inferior to the performance of the GT750M on the Lenovo Y500 with the same CPU. In total, the performance of the DX11 Gigabyte P2542 is only slightly less than 10% compared to the Y500.
The Gigabyte P2542 got a 3DMark v1.0 score for the Cloud Gate test of 10620 which is approximately 9.5% higher than the Lenovo Y500.
The use of m-SATA SSD as a system partition makes the boot process to open and close applications super fast. You can see the storage score on PCMark 7 which reached 5171 points. This certainly boosted the Computation points which resulted in the final score reaching 6861 points, which was quite extraordinary. Unfortunately, the operating system that is bundled is still Windows 7. If you already have Windows 8, boot speed and application access are guaranteed to be faster. Apart from that, the performance of this notebook is the same as other notebooks with class specifications, especially those that are both equipped with the GTX 660M.
Gaming Benchmark
All gaming benchmarks that are run use Full-HD resolution with High detail. The results are biased you see. The GTX660M still provides a very playable display, which is above 40fps.
Battery Performance
The duration of 1 hour 11 minutes for a notebook with GTX660M that provides Nvidia Optimus has not been said to be good. Generally, notebooks in this spec range can touch 90 minutes. The use of the 2nd HDD type 7200rpm, is the most likely to cause the battery to drain faster. But according to the performance obtained (see PCMark7 test).
Conclusion
With a price range of almost 16 million, the Gigabyte P2542 will compete with the ASUS G75VW-BB71 FR as well as the Lenovo Y500, both of which are still using Ivy-Bridge plus GTX660M. However, with an offer of a full 2-year warranty, SSD 128 and BluRay, the Gigabyte P2542 has more sales points whose value is too bad to miss. Now for those of you who have run out of G75VW-BB71 FR, this Gigabyte P2542 is the most perfect choice.
Pros:
- – SSD system storage
- – Build material and finishing design is very good
- – Blu-Ray Drive
Cons:
- – The location of the port is a little difficult to access
Fairs :
- – The use of Windows 7 does not maximize SSD performance.
