Guide on How to Create Email with Your Own Domain (100% Free)
This article is about how to create an email with your own domain at no cost or free. Why is it important to have an email with your own domain? Using email with your own domain will look more professional, especially for online business purposes. So your email will be like zakaria@nesabamedia.com.
Here I don’t use email from cpanel or create my own email server because in some cases it burdens the hosting resources we use. In this tutorial, we use a free service to create emails with their own domain, not premium services such as Google Apps which users are required to pay every month.
For the size of the company, maybe using a service like Google Apps is highly recommended because of its complete features and larger storage. But if it’s a free one with more than enough features and only requires a few users, then my recommendation falls on an email hosting service from Zoho. By using free email hosting from Zoho, we can create emails with their own domain, a maximum of 25 users and each user gets 5GB of storage. More than enough, right?
How to create an email with your own domain
1. First, you have to register first here.
2. Enter your email and password. If so, select SIGN UP FOR FREE.
3. Don’t forget to check your email inbox, and click the verification email sent by Zoho.
4. Next select Mail.
5. You will be asked to enter your mobile number for verification purposes. Enter your active mobile number along with your Zoho account password. Then select Send code.
6. You will receive an SMS containing a verification code. Enter the code, then select Verify Code.
7. Your mobile number has been successfully verified. choose Continue to continue.
8. Since we want to use a free email hosting service, then please choose LITE by clicking the button CHOOSE.
9. Enter your domain address, then select Continue.
10. Here we are required to verify domain ownership. On Select your domain’s DNS Manager (DNS Hosting provider) from the list, choose Others.
11. There are three methods that you can choose, namely by entering CNAME or TXT record at the registrar where you bought the domain or you can also upload the HTML file provided by Zoho. In this example, I chose to enter CNAME records for domain ownership verification.
12. To add CNAME or TXT record each registrar is not much different from each other. It’s impossible for me to explain everything, starting from Namecheap, Godaddy, Name, IDWebhost, Rumahweb and so on.
Setting CNAME records in Cloudflare
My domain is registered with Namecheap, but I need to set up CNAME records to DNS settings in Cloudflare.
How come? My blog uses a CDN from Cloudflare to ease performance, speed up site loading and manage traffic on my blog. Now when we use the CDN service from Cloudflare, we are required to change the default nameserver from the registrar where you bought the domain to the nameservers that have been given by Cloudflare.
So if you don’t use Cloudflare, you can directly add a CNAME record on your hosting (from Cpanel) or directly from the registrar where you bought the domain.
1. As I explained, I need to login in Cloudflare to set up the CNAME record. Visit the following link to login.
2. Then select DNS as I marked the arrow.
3. Enter CNAME records like in the picture below. If so, select Add Record.
4. CNAME records which has been added looks more or less like the image below.
5. Then return to the domain ownership verification page. choose Proceed to CNAME Verification.
6. If you get a notification like this, it means that you have successfully added the CNAME record. After that, select Verify Now to continue.
7. On this page, you can add any primary user you want. For example, I want to create an email with the address admin@nesabamedia.com. So I just enter admin, then select Create Account.
8. On page Add Users, you can add other users, up to 25 users. I personally just two or three users is enough, if you want to add it, select Proceed to Add Users.
9. Enter your name, email ID and password in the fields provided. Maybe you are confused, the email that we created earlier (admin@nesabamedia.com) how come there is no field to enter a password. The password from the email is the same as the one you entered during the initial registration at Zoho (Step number 2). When it is finished, select OK.
10. On page Create Groups, you can create a group account on this page. I don’t think it’s that important, so I chose SKIP.
11. To receive email, we must add MX Records at the hosting or registrar where you bought the domain. As I already explained, since I’m using Cloudflare, I should also add MX Records this in Cloudflare’s DNS settings.
12. Still on the DNS page in Cloudflare. Enter 2 MX records needed, then select Add Records to add it.
13. If you have added it, the result is more or less like the picture below.
14. Return to configuration page MX Records earlier, and select MX Lookup to ensure that the configuration MX records what you entered is correct.
15. Wait a few minutes, then you will get a notification like the one below which indicates that the configuration MX Records what you entered is correct. After that select OK, then select Next.
16. To prevent spam emails from users of other email services and authentication purposes, you can add SPF and DKIM records. Add these SPF and DKIM records via DNS settings in Cloudflare. How to add it is the same as when you add CNAME and MX records. Since this step is optional, I purposely skip. At this point, you can use email with your own domain for sending or receiving emails.
For page SPF/ DKIM, Email Migration, Mail Client Configuration until Mobile Access I accidentally skipped it because it was optional. You can set it yourself if you think necessary because the steps are very easy.
