Find the Games folder
Find your Steam game installation folder. By default in Windows, it is located at:
C:/Program Files (x86)/Steam/
If you’re a mac user, open Finder then Go > Go on the top menu bar, then enter this:
~Library/Application Support/Steam/
If you are a Linux user, just go to the local user directory
~/.local/share/Steam/
If you have found it successfully, the folder will be divided into sub-folders again as shown below: In steamapps there will be several folders, the common folder is the game that you have installed.
Start Game Backup
Method 1
Determine the game you want to backup, for example if you want all the games you want to backup then stay Copy all folders from game name to other folders or external hard drive.
Method 2
Similar to the first method, but the first method is only to backup the main game folder if you have a lot of mods or workshops it won’t go to backup. So you better do a full backup.
Copy the steamapps folder then move to another location or external hard drive. The size of steamapps depends on the game you have in it, but this method is safer and there is no need to download workshops or anything like that.

After the backup, here’s how to restore the game or install the game without re-downloading it. It can be on a new computer or on the same computer that has just reinstalled Windows.
- Open the Steam app.
- Click menu top left tab Steam > Backup and Restore Games…
- After that select Restore a previous backup click Next.
- And you have to set the destination Backup folder the one you have, the random location is in c:program files (x86)steamBackups but if you don’t have it stored there, please specify it yourself. in the below section Browse there is Program backups found: if it says none, it means that the backup file was not found. If it says the name of the game you want to restore then it’s correct. After that, just click Next, as in the photo below.
- Will appear EULA So, you can read it first but it’s long or just click I Agree below below.
- The Create desktop shortcut and Create start menu shortcut options will appear, both are left tick and then click Next. Wait for the process to finish, how long depends on the size of the game.
