Microsoft announced that Windows 11 will be released on October 5. Launch The Verge on Wednesday (1/9), the new operating system will be available as Free Upgrades for eligible Windows 10 PCs, or on new devices that came with pre-load Windows 11.

The free update to Windows 11 will start rolling out on October 5th, but like many updates previous windows, upgrade free will be available gradually. More compatible devices will be a priority for Microsoft. Then, Windows 11 will be available for more devices in the market in a few weeks after the launch date.

“Following the incredible learnings of Windows 10, we wanted to ensure that we provide users with the best possible experience,” said Aaron Woodman, general manager of Windows marketing at Microsoft.

“We hope that all eligible devices will be offered upgrade free to Windows 11 in mid-2022.”

On a Windows 10 PC, users will be notified of availability upgrade Windows 11 via Windows Update notification. Users can also check whether the device they own is eligible for upgrade Windows 11 via Windows Update, or Microsoft’s dedicated PC Health Check App.

Although it will launch on October 5th, not all of the announced features will be available. For example, Microsoft will provide Android apps to Windows 11 in partnership with Amazon and Intel, but this feature won’t be available on October 5.

Preview Android apps on Windows 11 will be available to Windows Insiders in the coming months, suggesting that it likely won’t roll out to all Windows 11 users until 2022.

“We look forward to continuing our journey to bring Android apps to Windows 11 and the Microsoft Store through our collaboration with Amazon and Intel. It will start with preview for Windows Insiders in the coming months,” said Aaron Woodman, general manager of Windows marketing at Microsoft.

Microsoft also clarified the minimum system requirements for Windows 11 last week, but it comes with a workaround for those of you whose devices don’t qualify.

You can install Windows 11 on any hardware using the ISO method, as long as your PC has a 64-bit 1GHz processor with dual cores or more, 4GB RAM, 64GB storage, and a TPM 1.2 chip.

If your PC is not fully compatible with Windows 11, don’t worry. Microsoft will still support Windows 10 until October 14, 2025. However, it’s unclear how many major updates Microsoft will release for Windows 10 over the next four years.
