Xbox Boss Praises Nintendo's Contribution to the Gaming Industry

GAMEFINITY.ID, Jakarta – The Playing With Power: The Nintendo Story series, which premiered earlier this March in the United States, features a documentary on Nintendo’s 131-year history in the gaming industry. A number of figures in the gaming industry such as former Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime, Atari founder Nolan Bushnell, to Microsoft’s Executive Vice President of Gaming Phil Spencer appear in this five-part documentary.

Spencer is arguably one of the most recognizable figures in the gaming industry, where his company is a competitor to Nintendo. The Xbox boss shared many comments about Nintendo and how past Nintendo consoles have inspired it.

“The role Nintendo has played in making gaming a safe and family-friendly experience, while bringing the core gaming experience to their platform, I think has laid the foundation for the (gaming) industry we have today,” he said.

“I don’t think you can separate the video game industry from Nintendo. I think they are intrinsically tied.”

Spencer said Nintendo’s console had shown him that Xbox needed to have a unique aspect to its platform excellence. He admitted that many people were inspired to be involved in the game world thanks to Nintendo.

“Watching them grow and innovate is great for us as an industry. They also inspire us to make Xbox better.”

Spencer cited Nintendo’s console, the Wii, which he called a unique innovation for gaming consoles. Nintendo is also known to have other unique innovations in terms of design, such as the design of the N64 controller which has a layout that looks like it needs to be run with three hands.

“I still don’t understand the controller, to be honest. I guess it’s multiple controllers in one, but you need three hands to play it!”

Earlier this year, a former Microsoft executive admitted that the parent company of Xbox had tried to buy Nintendo about 20 years ago. But the offer was only considered a joke by Nintendo. This is also what makes Microsoft finally produce its own console, the Xbox which is now entering its fourth generation with the Xbox Series X/S.
