Spider-Man Review: Miles Morales, Success Meets Expectations

GAMEFINITY.ID, Jakarta – With the launch of the PlayStation 5 globally, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales was originally expected to be the launch title for the next-gen console. Luckily, PlayStation 4 gamers can finally still play this game, after Sony decided to release this game also for the PS4 platform. Even so, the impression of the “next generation” of this game is still felt, both in terms of graphics, themes, and gameplay that offers a variety of adventures to play.

GAMEFINITY.ID had the opportunity to try out this game directly on the PlayStation 4 platform, shortly after the global launch of this game on 12 November. Receiving positive responses from various game critics, Marvel’s Spider-Man Miles Morales deserves to be the most anticipated game by lovers of the action-adventure genre. Here’s the discussion.

Gameplay (8.5/10)

Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales/PS4/Rizal

Spider-Man: Miles Morales is set a year after the events of the previous game. For gamers who have played Marvel’s Spider-Man (2021), especially those who have played The City That Never Sleeps DLC, you must be familiar with the figure and background of Miles Morales. In the previous game, the player also had time to control Miles in several segments, even though at that time he had not yet received the super spider power.

Just like Peter Parker, Miles got a genetic spider bite that eventually gave the 17-year-old superpowers and took on the role of Spider-Man. After struggling to shake off the trauma of his father’s death due to Martin Li’s attack, Miles gets special training from Peter Parker who acts as a brother figure (Spider-bro) as well as a mentor to master his new abilities.

At the beginning of the game, players will also fight with Spider-Man to stop the Rhino from being released (due to Miles’ carelessness) during the prisoner transfer. That’s where Miles finds out his super power, Venom Strike, is the power that characterizes him. With his new powers, Miles is trusted by Peter who wants to take a “vacation” to become the only Spider-Man New York has.

Miles eventually finds himself in a fight between the energy company, Roxxon and the gang The Underground. Meanwhile, Miles’ mother, Rio Morales, is running a campaign to become a city councilor, to stop Roxxon’s expansion being too fast and dangerous for the environment.

For gamers who have played Spider-Man (2021), it will be familiar with the gameplay offered by Miles Morales. Although of course this game presents a new adventure. In addition to being able to carry out a number of Story missions, there are also several side missions that are almost the same as Spider-Man, ranging from finding a missing cat, helping New Yorkers with various problems, stopping ongoing criminal acts, to completing combat, stealth and traversal challenges. .

Coupled with other missions from the Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man application that can be completed. Another thing that Spider-Man veterans will be familiar with is J. Jonah Jameson’s Just the Facts podcast, which tells a story line of events that have taken place during the game from JJJ’s perspective. In addition to JJJ’s podcast, there is also a podcast by Danika Hart which is indeed something new from the game.

Combat mechanics in Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales/PS4/Rizal

For combat mechanisms, players must be careful when to attack, dodge, and use gadgets and venom strikes to defeat the enemy. It feels like the combat techniques that were previously a mainstay in Spider-Man (2021) can’t be reapplied in Miles Morales. Take for example if previously the finisher can be used if the combo meter has been filled, this time the finisher can only be used if the player touches 15 combo strikes without breaking. This is what makes gamers must be careful in carrying out attacks.

On the other hand, this time the combo meter will actually be used to use venom strikes, besides of course regenerating health (same as in the previous game). This change makes the previous Spider-Man veteran players still have to adapt again to the new combat movement. While new players also don’t think it will be too difficult if they have mastered basic control well.

For the stealth mechanism, besides of course perch, ceiling, and wall Takedowns this time, gamers can also take advantage of the camouflage, where Miles can disappear for a while to avoid enemy attacks. The traversal mechanism is not much different from the first game, where Miles has the ability to web swing, run over walls, and other acrobatic moves.

Upgrade skills, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales/PS4/Rizal

To be honest, it is this traversal ability that brings its own excitement from Spider-Man games, supported by an angle camera that follows the player’s movements, where gamers can feel as if they are swinging from building to building like a real Spider-Man.

Players can also upgrade their character’s skills. There are three skills, namely challenge skills, combat skills and camouflage skills that can be upgraded through skill points. To get skill points, players must complete a number of missions to level up the character. Players can also collect a number of tokens which can later be used to upgrade gadgets and collect spider suits.

Graphics (9.5/10)

Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales/PS4/Rizal

Although it was originally prepared for the PlayStation 5, the author himself still thinks that the PlayStation 4 version of Spider-Man: Miles Morales has managed to bring a number of improvements in terms of graphics. Some of the visual effects that are displayed, especially when players perform venom strikers (punch, dash, jump) look so fitting and show that this game deserves to be prepared as a “next generation” game.

Still using the Insomniac Engine that Insomniac has used since Ratchet And Clank, the appearance of the character design is indeed detailed with the right CGI polish. This makes the character’s expression look so natural and not stiff. Plus, the time setting of Spider-Man: Miles Morales is winter, so we can enjoy the snowy city of New York. The snow effect that is presented also looks natural, and adds to the impression of a holiday or festival in the game.

Controls (9.5/10)

Control, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales/PS4/Rizal

For veteran Spider-Man players, of course, they are very familiar with the control mechanism to move Miles Morales. The buttons used to hit, jump, dodge, use gadgets and swing are the same as those used in Spider-Man (2021). The difference lies in the special abilities of Miles Morales, namely venom strike and camouflage which Peter Parker does not have.

But for those who have never played this game, it won’t be difficult to master the controls after playing the game for a while. Moreover, at the beginning of the game there is also a tutorial that makes it easier for gamers to master Spider-Man’s movements. To be sure, the control mechanism made in the game is relatively simple and makes it easier for players to control the character. There is no combo that is too complicated to master combat, as well as to master traversal with a web swing that is made simple but looks acrobatic.

Addictive (8.5/10)

Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales/PS4/Rizal

As far as there are missions that can be played, it seems that gamers want to play this game for hours non-stop. With an open world system, gamers also have the freedom to control characters to follow missions or just enjoy winter in New York City as Spider-Man. Even if all missions have ended, gamers can play New Game Plus with a higher difficulty than normal playthrough, with all the upgrades that can be brought from the previous game.

Although it must be admitted, the story of this game seems shorter than Spider-Man (2021). In some forums, the main story of this game is said to be completed in only 8-10 hours. Faster time can certainly be achieved by gamers who have previously played Spider-Man games before.

In short, the playthrough of this game will likely be compensated by Insomniac via DLC, just like The City That Never Sleeps in Spider-Man (PS4). By bringing a number of characters from the Spider-Man comic universe such as Prowler, Roxxon Corporation to Ganke Lee, there is still a lot of room to be explored from this game.

Conclusion

Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales/PS4/Rizal

Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales is one of the games in 2021 that managed to meet the expectations of gamers, whether they have played Marvel’s Spider-Man (2021) or are new players in the series, to fans of Marvel, especially the characters. Spider-Man. With a variety of skills, gadgets, combat, stealth and traversal owned by Miles Morales, plus the ability to venom strike and camouflage, gamers can feel as if they are Spider-Man (Miles Morales) in this game.

It’s not wrong if Sony uses this game exclusively to popularize their consoles, PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4. Even if there is a drawback to this game, the playthrough is relatively shorter than the previous Spider-Man. But for the collectors of trophies, there are some challenges that make this game can be explored more than just a playthrough.

GAMEFINITY.ID provides total review score 9.0 out of 10 for this game by Insomniac.(zal)
