Sony Delays Gran Turismo 7 Until 2022

GAMEFINITY.ID, Jakarta – Fans of the Gran Turismo racing game seem to be disappointed. The reason is, the launch of the latest series of games, Gran Turismo 7 which was originally planned to be released this year, finally had to be postponed until 2022. This was confirmed by CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) Jim Ryan in an interview with GQ.

“The GT7 has been impacted by production challenges related to Covid. As a result the rollout had to shift from 2021 to 2022. With the ongoing pandemic, this is a dynamic and subject to change situation. Several important aspects of game production have slowed down over the last few months,” Ryan said as quoted by Games Radar.

“We’ll share more details about the GT7 release date as it becomes available.”

Sony first implied in December that Gran Turismo 7 could be delayed, when it removed the reference to a “first half 2021” release date from a PS5 marketing video.

The delay might not come as a surprise given Polyphony Digital’s reputation for procrastinating on developing games. After all, Sony’s schedule for the release of PS5 games this year is fairly solid, including Deathloop, Ghostwire: Tokyo and Kena: Bridge of Spirits.

Regarding the fate of the other three games, Returnal, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart and Horizon Forbidden West, Ryan also told GQ that he felt confident Sony could release the three games in 2021. However, Ryan said he would not hesitate to delay the launch of the game. if the delay is necessary.

“There are two approaches to this. You can stick to the date and launch the game regardless of the quality, or you can release it at the right time. We always take the latter approach. There are examples of other publishers trying other approaches.”

“It never worked. But I think in this world, where creative people work remotely, you just have to respect the fact that development needs to take what it takes and get the game right. ”

Earlier this month, Gran Turismo 7 head Kazunori Yamauchi said fans can expect a lot from the PS5 racing game, which is touted to be similar to previous games in the series. The final game in the PlayStation 4 racing series, GT Sport doesn’t follow the formula of its predecessors, cutting back on its massive car collection and emphasizing online driving competitions and esports.

Yamauchi said players should expect a more traditional experience from the upcoming PS5 installment, in addition to the features introduced with the Sport.

“In Gran Turismo 7, while inheriting elements like the (FIA) championship embodied in Sport, we will return to full volumes like Gran Turismo 1 and 4, and provide the best Gran Turismo experience to date. So for those who have known Gran Turismo for a long time, I think they will be a little nostalgic. ”
