PS5 Early Review: Considered Too Big, Barely Loading

GAMEFINITY.ID, Jakarta – The latest game console from Sony, PlayStation 5 will be released to the public starting Thursday (12/11/2021). A number of international media had the opportunity to try out the next generation console early. tries to summarize the reviews of The Verge and Tech Radar, which discusses the various advantages and disadvantages of the PS5 when reviewed for the first time.

Both The Verge and Tech Radar compact commented on the physical size of the PS5 which was considered too large for the current game console. For your information, the PS5 which has a length of 26 cm, a height of 39 cm, a width of 10.4 cm is indeed listed as the largest console Sony has ever released. PS5 weighs about 4.5 kg.

This relatively “big” size is considered to be difficult for gamers, especially those who don’t have much space in the house to place the PS5. The design of the PS5, which is claimed to resemble a pentagon, is somewhat innovative compared to the console in general, which is in the form of a “box” with rigid and symmetrical corners.

The sides of the console are covered with white plastic panels that have a curved design. This white panel can be removed to access the SSD expansion slot behind it. Even so, Sony has confirmed at launch that additional SSD storage accessories will not be available. Thus, gamers must be careful in allocating internal storage which can only be used around 667 GB of a total capacity of 825 GB.

In the middle, there is a black panel that functions to contain air vents, a USB-A port, a USB-C port, an Ethernet port, and an HDMI 2.1 port on the back. For the standard version, the front will have a Blu-ray disc drive for the standard version. Just like its predecessor, the PS5 can be placed horizontally or vertically. Sony also provides a round black plastic stand for console placement.

If a size that is too large is considered a drawback of the PS5, one of the most felt advantages is the very fast loading time. This is because it uses an SSD-based PS5 storage media, not an HDD like on the PS4.

TheVerge says Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales can be loaded in just 17 seconds. For comparison, Miles Morales’ loading time on PS4 reaches 1 minute 27 seconds, aka almost 5 times the loading time on PS5. Other game titles in general also record shorter loading times, such as Final Fantasy VII Remake which can be loaded in 35 seconds, Death Stranding 54 seconds, and Genshin Impact 59 seconds.

PS5 also uses AMD Zen 2 (octa-core) with 3.5 GHz speed, 16 GB RAM, and AMD RDNA 2 graphics processor with 36 compute units (CUs) and computing power of 10.28 teraflops. PS5 hardware capabilities allow the device to run various games that support high resolutions and frame rates, namely 8K (60fps) and 4K (120fps).

For graphic quality, of course, it is said to be better than PS4. PS5 also supports ray-tracing technology to display lighting effects and object reflections, so gamers can get a more realistic impression while playing. Another advantage of the PS5 engine is that it is not noisy, even though it produces a lot of power.

The Verge also praised the PS5 controller called DualSense. Several new features such as haptic feedback and adaptive triggers provide more real sensation effects to enhance the gaming experience. The Verge tried to try DualSense while playing the Astro’s Playroom bundling game. Haptic feedback can produce a light vibration on the left or right side of the accessory, following the footstep of the character being played.

Then, the speakers embedded in the controller will also provide a variety of sound sensations when users walk on different surfaces, for example when passing through asphalt, sand, snowy roads, and so on.

Adaptive triggers are the L1/L2 and R1/R2 buttons found on most PlayStation controllers. However, on the PS5, the button can provide different feedback depending on the intensity of the press. For example, when shooting a bow, the user can press the trigger button firmly to launch a strong attack as well. Instead, the user can press the button slowly so that the shot is not too tight or hard.

Both The Verge and Tech Radar both concluded that the PS5 managed to bring a number of significant improvements over its predecessor. The main improvement is of course seen from the much improved performance, such as game loading times being cut down to just seconds and support for resolutions up to 8K 60 fps and 4k 120 fps. Both sites also praise DualSense and the so-called simpler and more beautiful interface (UI).

Sony’s PlayStation 5 will officially launch on November 12 in the United States, Japan, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, and South Korea. While in several other countries, the PS5 will only be released later or 19 November. It is also unclear whether Indonesia is included in the category of “other countries”.
