PS5 and Xbox Series Scams Reportedly Earn More Than IDR 397 Billion on eBay
GAMEFINITY.ID, Jakarta – A recent study highlighted the extent of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S resale market. Scavengers or collectors reportedly made more than 28 million USD or around Rp. 397 billion on resale of these next-generation consoles via eBay.
This was revealed according to an analysis conducted by researcher Michael Driscoll, who said he was listing eBay sales for the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S through December 1. Published in Dev, the results show that more than 60,000 console units were resold through the online marketplace, including 6,863 Xbox Series S consoles, 22,932 Xbox Series X consoles, 7,322 PS5 Digital Edition consoles, and 25,642 PS5 Standard consoles.
While the Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X have a manufacturer-recommended retail price of $299 (approximately $2 million) and $499 (approximately $1,000), their average selling price is $469 (approx. Xbox Series S and $865 for Series X (around Rp. 12.3 million), generating a profit of over $9 million (about Rp. 126 billion) for scalpers.
The PS5 Digital Edition (MSRP 399 USD or around IDR 5.6 million) has an average selling price of 937 USD (approximately IDR 13.3 million), while the PS5 Standard (MSRP 499 USD or around IDR 7 million) has an average selling price of 1,021 USD or around Rp. 14.5 million, resulting in a profit of USD 19 million or around Rp. 269 billion for retailers.
Another popular online marketplace, StockX, also claimed last week that users had resold more than 60,000 next-generation consoles through the site in the month of its launch. Nearly twice as many PS5 consoles have been resold as Xbox Series X/S consoles, according to StockX senior economist Jesse Einhorn.
PS5 and Xbox Series X / S resale prices soared due to a lack of stock for these next-generation consoles at product launches by Sony and Microsoft. One of the scalper groups, CrepChiefNotify claims to have acquired more than 5,000 next-generation consoles to resell for a profit over the past month.
