Indonesia's Internet Speed One of the Worst in the World According to Ookla

GAMEFINITY.ID, Salatiga – The Indonesian government is currently focusing on developing infrastructure based on digitalization and industry 4.0.

But in fact according to internet speed testing site, Speedtest by Ookla internet speed in Indonesia is one of the worst in the world.

Last May, Ookla released Speedtest Global Index which is a list of internet speed rankings of various countries in the world. Ookla examines two categories of internet speed, namely Mobile Connection and Fixed Broadband or cable internet networks.

Indonesia’s internet speed details

In the Speedtest Global Index, Indonesia turned out to be occupying 112 out of 137 countries in the Mobile Connection category and ranked 113 out of 180 countries in the Fixed Broadband category.

Indonesia is ranked 112 and 113 with an average internet speed of around 21 Mbps (2.63 MBps) for Mobile and 26.11 Mbps (3.26 MBps) for Fixed Broadband.

Ranks 112 and 113 turned out to be very far below other ASEAN countries. All of Indonesia’s neighbors in ASEAN rank well above Indonesia in the mobile connection category.

For the Fixed Broadband category, only Myanmar and Cambodia are under Indonesia.

The following is a complete list of internet speed rankings within ASEAN:

  • Indonesia – Mobile : 21.04 Mbps (Rank 112), Fixed Broadband : 26.11 Mbps (Rank 113)
  • Malaysia – Mobile : 27.52 Mbps (Rating 86), Fixed Broadband : 102.91 Mbps (Rank 45)

Reflecting on this data, the government should further improve the connection speed in Indonesia, considering the country’s goals are to focus on digitalization and industry 4.0.

With the launch of 5G services by Telkomsel and Indosat, of course, we hope that internet speeds in Indonesia will be better in the future. In addition to internet speed, connection coverage to all people in Indonesia must also be considered.
