How to Draft Pick and Ban in Mobile Legends (ML) Rank Match!
In the Epic rank and above, there is a prominent change when you pick a hero named drafting. Where your team and your opponent will get the opportunity to ban 3 heroes, and just pick 5 heroes.
For Mythic rank and above where macro and micro players are good enough, drafting can be main differentiator. When your draft is superior to your opponent’s draft, your chance of winning can reach 70%, the rest is just your game execution.
In the draft pick, you can be the first pick or the second pick. From each type there is a different draft pick & tire strategy that you can try in your ML rank match.
Drafting Strategy for First Pick
1. First pick tire strategy
As a first pick, you have the opportunity to pick 1 overpowered hero (OP) which is usually always banned. Then how to pick the OP hero?
Because Mobile Legends (ML) can ban 6 heroes in rank mode, usually there are 6 heroes who are considered the most OP in a patch or season. For a list of the 6 most OP heroes in ML season 19 that you should ban, you can see the list here.
The strategy is to try for 2 OP heroes at once by not charging 2 days of OP from the 6 heroes. This makes the opposing team confused whether they should Ban 1 of the 2 heroes (causing your team to get 1 hero less OP than 2) or release the 2 OP heroes (so you take the more OP).
But this strategy should only be done if you really master some of the 6 most OP heroes available. If not, it’s better to play it safe by banning these heroes.
2. First Turn: Choose sidelaner 1/tank
Ok, let’s just say that in the normal ranked scenario, you will ban 6 heroes the. Here you should pick a sidelaner, because it will be safer if your sidelaner is countered than a jungler hero. And many strong sidelaners who don’t have natural counters in their lanes such as Lapu Lapu, Yu Zhong, Esmeralda, Khaleed, and Thamuz.
If there is an open meta tank hero, you can also try to pick it. Heroes like Hilda and Jawhead are still worthy of being the first pick as well.
3. Second Turn: Select sidelaner 1/tank and support
In turn 2 you can choose tank or sidelaner 1 and followed by support. No support heroes at this time are too OP except Natalia. For meta support heroes, there are Selena, Luo Yi, Pharsa, Lunox, Kagura, Valir, and Chang’e.
4. Third Turn: Choose jungler and sidelaner 2
In turn 3 jungler is the right time to pick because the jungler hero is now quite easy on the counter. If your jungler is the last pick, you can see the opponent’s weakness. What if the opponent has a Marksman (MM) hero or a long-range mage, you can use an assassin to penetrate the mage. When your opponent is filled with many fighters and hard heroes, you can pick MM so that you will be difficult to reach by these fighters.
Then for the 2nd sidelaner, you can choose whether you want to pick a fighter hero, 2nd mage, or MM. Pick sidelaner in the final phase makes your draft flexible. For example, if your opponent has a lot of slow fighters, you can surprise pick your opponent with Wan Wan or Harith sidelane.

Drafting Strategy for Second Pick
1. Second Pick Ban Strategy
When you become a second pick, you have 2 choices: between banning all OP heroes or trying to release 3 OP heroes in the meta.
Of course, banning all heroes is a safer option. Especially if you can’t play these heroes, it’s better to just ban them.
But if your party can play multiple heroes, you can try releasing 3 OP heroes at once. With this, your opponent can only pick 1 OP hero and you can pick 2 OP heroes at once.

2. First Turn: Choose sidelaner 1 and tank
The order is the same as the first pick, to be safe, you can open a pick with 1 sidelaner and a tank so that other hero roles can be used to counter your opponent. Pick sidelaner and tank heroes also have fewer counters, unlike support heroes or junglers which are usually easier on the counter.

3. Second Turn: Choose support and jungler/sidelaner 2
For support, it is quite safe to pick in this phase because at least 3 opposing heroes have been caught. Now for the selection of jungler / sidelaner 2, you should pick a hero who can indeed be placed in both lanes flexibly. Example: Wan Wan, Claude, Harith, or Yi Sun Shin.
So when your opponent’s hero counters one of the heroes above, you just have to choose whether you want to put the above heroes as junglers or sidelaners.
4. Third Turn: Choose jungler/sidelaner 2
So, your last pick is just to read the situation. Do you want to pick mage/fighter heroes in sidelane 2? Or do you pick 2 late game warranty heroes so that your team seems to have 2 hero cores?
This again depends on the enemy’s picks so you have to be observant to see opportunities. Of course it’s safer if you don’t have a line up that is too greedy so you can team fight from the early game. But that doesn’t mean you can’t try 2 cores because we’ve seen many teams in successful tournaments with 2 cores like Alter Ego and RRQ.
