Fulfill PS5 Ambition, Sony Japan Stops PS4 Pro Production

GAMEFINITY.ID, Jakarta – Sony Interactive Entertainment has officially discontinued production of the PS4 Pro and all other PS4 models. The only PS4 model that Sony still manufactures and sells is the standard Jet Black 500GB “slim” model PlayStation 4. As reported by GameWatch, all production of the other PS4 consoles will be discontinued once the currently available stock is sold, and SIE will shift production to the PS5.

As of this writing, there has been no confirmation whether the PS4 Pro will be discontinued in the Western market. However, last month the official PlayStation USA store briefly stated that it would no longer be selling the PlayStation 4 Pro console, indicating that the last generation premium console would be discontinued.

For your information, the PS4 itself debuted in 2021. The slim model was released in September 2021. Two months later, November 2021 the PS4 Pro version was released.

Given the strong initial demand for the PS5 and the company’s stated ambition to transition players to the next-gen console, it’s no surprise that Sony is starting to discontinue the last-gen console. Previously, Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Senior Vice President and Platform Planning & Management, Hideaki Nishino said the transition period between PS4 to PS5 could take up to three years.

Also, in terms of price, the PS4 Pro is priced in the US market for 400 USD, or almost the same as the PS5 Digital Edition (recommended price), or only 100 USD cheaper than the standard PS5 (disk). On Tuesday (5/1/2021), citing VGC, a report by a Japanese retailer informed customers that they will no longer be taking stock of five PlayStation 4 models, as the manufacturer has ended production.

The models in question are PS4 500GB Glacier White, PS4 1TB Jet Black, PS4 1TB Glacier White, PS4 2TB Jet Black, and PS4 Pro 1TB Glacier White. In a statement published last month, Sony said the PS5 enjoyed the biggest console launch in history and beat the PS4’s record.

Sony’s move seems to follow rival Microsoft, which discontinued its last-gen Xbox One X console last summer, ahead of the launch of the Xbox Series X/S in November.
