Class Action Lawsuit Confirmed, CDPR Ready To Defend Cyberpunk 2077
GAMEFINITY.ID, Jakarta – Cyberpunk 2077 game developer, CD Projekt Red is determined to “defend himself with passion”, after the lawsuits regarding the game were confirmed. CD Projekt said it would take “strong action in self-defense” against a class-action lawsuit alleging that the company misled investors over Cyberpunk 2077.
In a statement published on December 25, 2021, the Warsaw-based company confirmed it had received notice of a class action lawsuit filed in California, United States on behalf of a group of investors. The class action lawsuit was filed by Rosen Law Firm, an investor rights law firm seeking damages for CD Projekt investors under federal securities laws.
The action relates to the launch of Cyberpunk 2077, which apparently experienced performance issues when running on last-gen consoles (PS4 and Xbox One) and the removal of Cyberpunk from the PlayStation Store, which caused CD Projekt’s stock price to drop 15 percent on December 18.
Based on the lawsuit, CD Projekt is accused of making false and/or misleading statements and/or failing to disclose that Cyberpunk 2077 is “virtually unplayable on current generation Xbox or PlayStation systems due to a large number of bugs”. It was further stated that issues with the console version caused “reputational and financial damage” due to Sony’s decision to remove Cyberpunk 2077 from the PlayStation Store, and other platform holders subsequently offered a full refund.
“As a result, the defendant’s statements regarding its business, operations and prospects, are materially false and misleading and/or lack reasonable grounds at all relevant times. When the actual details enter the market … investors are at a loss,” the law firm claims, quoted by VGC.
In a statement responding to the class action lawsuit, CD Projekt said it would “take strong measures to defend itself against such claims.” The troubled launch of Cyberpunk 2077 caused CD Projekt’s stock price to plummet and removed more than $1 billion from the company’s founders’ fortunes.
At least two other law firms – one in the United States and another in Poland, CD Projekt’s home country – said they were investigating the basis of a similar class action lawsuit last month. Despite these obstacles, Cyberpunk 2077 has actually enjoyed a very successful launch in terms of sales. A reported 13 million game copies were sold, becoming one of the strongest debuts for a premium game.
