14 Minutes of Gameplay The Medium, Give a Touch A la Silent Hill

GAMEFINITY.ID, Jakarta – The next project from horror game specialist, Bloober Team, The Medium has just released a new trailer. In the video, the Polish developer shows his love for classic survival horror genres like Resident Evil and Silent Hill. Quoted from Polygon, Bloober Team even recruited famous Silent Hill composer Akira Yamaoka to write the game’s soundtrack with musician Arkadiusz Reikowski.

Medium also exudes ambition, building on the foundations of psychological horror laid by the studio’s previous game, Observer and Layers of Fear, with a bolder and more subtle presentation. In December, Polygon got a preview of The Medium over Discord gameplay demo. Principal game designer Wojciech Piejko and producer Jacek Zieba guide how their new psychological horror game is executed, and how the dual reality mechanic allows protagonist Marianne, the eponymous medium, to explore two worlds at once.

The Bloober team started a demo in the lobby of an abandoned Polish hotel, which was based on an actual location in the country. It’s more than just a spooky setting, with late communist-era architecture simultaneously grounded and real. Drawn to the hotel by terrifying visions, it is here that Marianne tunes her supernatural senses to hear messages emitted from another world, and where she meets a masked girl – a lost spirit from the spirit world – named Sadness.

Later gamers are also invited to experience Marianne’s body outside, where they will meet a hostile creature known as The Maw (voiced by Troy Baker). Marianne is limited in her fighting abilities, and cannot defeat this metaphysical entity, so she can only dodge.

Subsequent sequences made in the real world indicate that spirit world entities can cross over to normal reality. And this beast, invisible and blind, must be overcome with careful stealth maneuvers, astute environmental observations, and Marianne’s psychic abilities.

Medium, coming to Windows PC and Xbox Series X on January 28, has a twist on the classic survival horror game Silent Hill (Konami) and the dual world exploration of Metroid Prime 2: Echoes. The puzzle-solving mechanics and investigation-driven narrative, combined with Bloober Team’s intense artistic direction, make it one of the games worth looking forward to in 2021.
