Xbox Series X Supports FidelityFX Super Resolution Technology

AMD will release FidelityFX Super Resolution, Nvidia’s DLSS competitor seems not just a rumor. Based on the information we got from the IGN website, that Microsoft has confirmed that AMD’s new supersampling technology will support the next-gen console, Xbox Series X/S.

“At Xbox, we are excited about the potential of AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution technology as another great method for developers to increase framerate and resolution. We’ll be sharing more of this soon,” a Microsoft spokesperson said in an IGN interview.

FidelityFX Super Resolution Can Increase Resolution and Framerate

Xbox Series X/S that supports FidelityFX Super Resolution technology will benefit owners of Microsoft’s ninth generation consoles to achieve higher framerates on running games. And what’s even more interesting is that none of the extra performance power goes into achieving those technical improvements.

We know that this good news should come as no surprise, as Microsoft itself has announced since Game Stack Live took place that they are including the FidelityFX tool into the development kit for Xbox Series X/S.

This allows developers to take advantage of platform-centric optimizations with AMD FidelityFX right from the development kit which helps lay the groundwork for FidelityFX Super Resolution support.

FidelityFX Super Resolution is a supersampling technology that can improve performance and image quality for games that support it.

FidelityFX Super Resolution will be available in four image enhancement modes: Ultra Quality, Quality, Balanced, and Performance.

Each of these modes to achieve higher image quality or increase the in-game frame rate.

Unlike its competitor, Nvidia’s DLSS, which is an image enhancement technology that uses AI to enhance images at lower resolutions and make them appear at higher resolutions without requiring substantial performance, FidelityFX Super Resolution requires no machine learning.

Plus it’s open source, meaning it can support graphics cards other than Nvidia VGA, AMD, including the older GTX series.

AMD did demonstrate testing the FidelityFX Super Resolution using a Radeon RX 68000 XT and Nvidia GTX 1060 running Godfall Gearbox Software on “Epic” graphics settings with ray tracing enabled, showing some interesting results.

FidelityFX Super Resolution is scheduled to launch on June 22 for desktops and laptops.
