Not Always Sweet, This is an Unforgettable Moment in Dragon Ball Z
There are plenty of reasons why Dragon Ball Z is one of the most popular manga on the planet, and it has nothing to do with Goku’s endless journey to new levels of power. The main advantage in this series made by Akira Toriyama is that there are many moments that make all the storylines feel valuable.
Moments that present plot twists and sacrifices that have an impact on changing characters or storylines. And here are some unforgettable moments in Dragon Ball Z.
Goku’s Death
After his son is kidnapped by Raditz, Goku is forced to team up with his former nemesis, Piccolo, to save his son. After a hard fight, Goku sacrifices himself and allows Piccolo to land the final blow at the cost of his own life.
Fortunately, this unforgettable moment in Dragon Ball Z has a different ending where Goku is successfully revived with Dragon Ball. This moment is definitely one of the biggest moments in the series, and the first time we actually see Goku go down against an opponent too strong for him.
It’s also an iconic family moment, given that Goku must leave his son, Gohan, in the protection of his former enemy, Piccolo. This event begins the story of the Saiyans, when an enemy stronger than Raditz begins to travel to Earth seeking the power of the Dragon Ball that can grant wishes.
Over 9,000!
Against Nappa, DBZ fans finally got to see their first true opponent after Goku trained under King Kai, where he received Saiyan level training on the surface with 10 times Earth’s gravity and the results were astounding.
After finishing his training, Goku rushed to help his friends who had almost all been defeated by Nappa except Piccolo, Krillin and Gohan. Using the results of his training, Goku barely needed to bring out his best strength against Nappa. This moment is also the moment where the classic meme “Over 9,000!” originated.
Goten Meets Goku For The First Time
Imagine growing up, only hearing stories about the father you never met. After all, everyone said that your father was the best fighter who ever lived, and that he died for the planet he loved.
Six-year-old Goten faces problems that a child shouldn’t have, and he doesn’t know who or what to trust. And the moment of meeting between Goten and Goku is arguably an unforgettable moment in Dragon Ball, especially because this moment is tucked in the midst of Buu’s madness.
Perfect Cell Shape
The storyline in Cell Saga is arguably an unforgettable moment in Dragon Ball Z. This character is truly thrilling and manages to pit the Z-Fighters against a unique android known as Cell, a creature from the future, created by scientist Dr. Gero, who has the best genetic qualities and abilities of any Z-Fighter.
In essence, he was created to be a perfect being on Earth. However, reaching his full maturity state and true potential requires the absorption of two twin androids with the numeric names 17 and 18. Thanks to the premature arrogance of Vegeta, who was eager to see Cell fight at his true potential, Cell was able to successfully absorb both androids, after which his transformation finished.
What Goku et al get is an unrivaled opponent that easily surpasses Vegeta and Trunks. Perfected Cell Form Armed with regeneration ability, super speed and extraordinary combat prowess. His ability elevation is probably one of the greatest moments to improve Goku’s character in the DBZ series.
Combination of Kamehameha Father and Son
The highlight of the battle in one of the DBZ saga is Gohan’s final attempt to defeat Cell. Lacking confidence in using his left arm after Cell’s return, Gohan looks ready to give up, but Goku appears to help him.
When Goku telepathically urges Gohan to release the Kamehameha with one hand, Goku also appears in spirit form, and assists his son in perfecting this move.
Vegeta’s Sacrifice
The moment where Vegeta really gets the spotlight is the moment when the former Saiyan Prince risks his life to save the planet he once tried to conquer. After Goku et al are unable to fight off the army of alien wizards Babaddi, Vegeta, who cannot be controlled by his mind by the wizard, prepares to take on the newly resurrected Majin Buu.
Despite his newfound power, the Saiyan Prince was unable to overcome Buu’s regeneration ability. Finding no other way to win, Vegeta decides to sacrifice himself in a massive explosion to eliminate every trace of the enemy, culminating in one of the most epic selfless acts performed by Vegeta in the DBZ series.
Vegeta’s sacrifice shows more than just the act of defeating a strong opponent. It is a representation of how far a selfish and arrogant character has changed since his intention to destroy the Earth.
He has changed and is now a gentleman with a wife, a son and a new life on a planet he never expected. The symbolic nature of Vegeta’s ultimate sacrifice remains one of the unforgettable moments in Dragon Ball Z and also the most iconic for the character.
Gohan: Super Saiyan II
From the very beginning of the DBZ series, Gohan’s potential as a fighter was never fully seen. From his training days with Piccolo, it seems as though there has always been the idea of a much greater power sleeping within a half Saiyan character that is said to surpass even Goku.
That potential is finally brought out when Gohan meets Cell. In the beginning, despite his training period with Goku and his new Super Saiyan abilities, Gohan’s passive nature kept him from being able to win against androids.
However, thanks to a boost from Android 16 in the moment of his death, Gohan was able to fully unleash his best abilities and nearly defeated Perfect Cell. Gohan’s strength is at such a level that a single punch to the stomach makes Cell spit out Android 18 and sends him back to his previous form.
This fight remains one of Gohan’s greatest moments in the series. Seeing Gohan’s potential finally being revealed is an iconic moment for DBZ fans, especially when his power surpasses that of his father.
Goku: Super Saiyan
For many Dragon Ball fans, this moment is the moment that sets Dragon Ball Z apart from other animated series. So far, this is an unforgettable moment in Dragon Ball Z. After surviving the Spirit Bomb attack from Goku, Frieza ruthlessly kills Krilin who is none other than Goku’s best friend.
It was this emotionally charged moment that acted as a catalyst for Goku, who was able to overcome a life-threatening injury and eventually attain Super Saiyan form. Goku who glows amber yellow with blonde hair prepares to finish killing Frieza with planet Namek and the entire universe at stake.
This easy Super Saiyan reveals and introduces a whole new battle structure and lays the groundwork for the future of Dragon Ball. We all know that this form is the first level of many more to come. The moment of the emergence of Super Saiyan is also a center of the narrative where this series continues to run with all its intrigue.
