MDL Disneyland Paris Major Group Phase Recap: Europe Dominates

The MDL Disneyland Paris Major group phase just ended last Sunday, May 5th. Some small surprises happened and made playoff bracket a little more interesting than usual.

As you know, this fourth Major group phase didn’t drop teams from the tournament at all, but rather determined their position in the double elimination bracket. The best team in the group is entitled to advance in upper bracket, while the rest have to start from lower bracket.

As the top ranking The current Dota Pro Circuit 2021, Virtus.Pro came out as the winner of group A. However, they had faced stiff resistance from their respective opponents, namely Beastcoast and Team Liquid. Despite losing, Team Liquid eventually came out as the second ranked team in group A and started playoffs from upper bracket. While Keen Gaming and Beastcoast have to start from lower bracket.

If Virtus.Pro had to struggle in a group that on paper was quite heavy, Team Secret actually walked very easily in group B. Facing Empire and Chaos EC, Puppey and his friends bulldozed both of them with a score of 2-0.

A small surprise occurred in this group when Chaos EC managed to beat Ninjas in Pajamas in the opening match of the group. Unfortunately, after that Chaos performance actually decreased. Even when they faced Ninjas in Pajamas again in the decider, they lost 0-2 and had to start playoffs from lower bracket.

Group C is dominated by two strong Chinese teams, namely Vici Gaming and PSG.LGD. But of the two teams, Vici Gaming looks more terrible because they were able to beat PSG.LGD 2-0 and become group winners. Fortunately PSG.LGD was then able to rise after defeating Mineski in the deciding party with a score of 2-0.

Finally, group D is filled with three strong teams, namely Evil Geniuses, Fnatic, and OG. As a team with a better record this season, Evil Geniuses were able to come out as group winners quite easily. The question is of course who will overtake them in the second place of the group.

Meeting Complexity, Fnatic surprisingly slumped. Despite having won the first game, Fnatic in the end lost by a score of 1-2 and finished in last place in group D. OG who were waiting in the decider then easily beat Complexity and took the last slot in upper bracket.

With the group results above, playoff bracket will be played are as follows:

As you can see, Europe is showing its dominance in the realm Dota 2. The four teams from the region managed to qualify for the upper bracket. Interestingly, the four teams also didn’t meet each other in the first round upper bracket.

Meanwhile at lower bracket, we will see two region kill. Beastcoast had to go head-to-head with Complexity’s North American counterpart, while Chaos EC had to meet Pain Gaming. With best of one in the first round, no one knows who will survive in lower bracket.
