How to upgrade a good camera so you don't regret it

Important points in upgrading the camera

mrfdn – If you want to buy a new camera, maybe this article can help a little.

Not only because of the brand, but there are some important notes about what to consider before buying a camera.

What are they? See the explanation below.

1. Do you want a total upgrade or a minor upgrade?

Total upgrade that is, you change your camera system. For example, now you are using a Nikon camera, then you want to switch to a Sony camera.

Well, what needs to be considered is whether the camera accessories that we have will support our new camera later?

For example, you have a flash used in Nikon cameras. Will the flash support Sony cameras later?

If not, you will have to decide to replace the flash that is compatible with the new accessories.

This total upgrade will cost more than the minor upgrade.

Minor upgrades it’s like you want to change the camera body only. Usually people upgrade from an APSC camera to a Full Frame camera of the same brand.

For example, you are currently using a Sony A6000 camera and then you want to upgrade to a Sony A7 mark II Full frame camera. Then the camera accessories that you have can still be used. Usually the lenses will also be compatible with the new system.

That way you can save costs.

The reason for this minor upgrade is usually because the camera they are currently using has features that are not what they want.

For example, you have a problem with your camera’s ISO output. There is noise that bothers you. So there sometimes people upgrade the camera body.

2. Upgrade to a new or second camera

Actually this choice depends on how much budget you have. If you have enough budget, of course, you can immediately choose to buy a new camera.

But if the budget is limited, a second camera is okay. As long as the features are still normal.

I’ve written about a guide to buying a second camera on this blog. You can read it first.

3. Features to consider when choosing a new camera

When upgrading the camera, of course you want new, better features. Do not let you do even downgrade. The new camera that you buy is not even better than your previous camera.

There are several camera features that should at least be noted before deciding to upgrade the camera. I also pay attention to this when sifting through the camera that I want to buy later.

  1. Full frame or apsc camera system
  2. ISO capability in reducing noise (important for those who often do wedding and prewedding photo jobs)
  3. Convenience of the camera in the hand.
  4. Your current lens compatibility (mounting)
  5. High megapixels
  6. Mirrorless or DSLR

I have discussed point 1 above, I will discuss the next few points.

Better ISO

If you like hunting landscape photos at night, for example, photos of stars. You certainly need a camera that can reduce noise.

Noise is the spots contained in digital photos produced by digital processes.

Choose a camera that has this feature better than your current camera.

Likewise for those of you who are usually involved in photo jobs. So the camera’s ISO capability becomes something that is often relied on. In certain conditions you definitely don’t want to miss the moment because you use a low iso setting, which ultimately results in a slow speed.

In addition, this iso is very important if the photo to be made is intended for printing needs. When a photo is printed large, usually noise will be visible if not handled properly.

The camera body is comfortable to hold

When you see a certain brand of camera on the internet, you don’t immediately decide to buy it. It’s good to try it right away. Come to the nearest camera shop in your city and try the camera ring.

Because sometimes a small camera body is not suitable for everyone.

So choose the one that really fits in your hand, not just the camera, the camera looks cool.

Lens mount

If you still want to use your old lens, it’s a good idea to choose a camera that is one brand and one system.

For example, you have a Canon 700D camera with an 18-55 kit lens. Then you want to upgrade to a Canon 70D camera, then you can still use the kit lens.

But it’s different when you want to upgrade to a Canon 6D camera, even though the lens can still be attached because they both have an EFS mount, but there will be vignette when shooting.

You will see black edges around the photo because the 6D camera system is full frame.

So to outsmart it, buy a lens that fits a full frame system such as a 24-70 lens.

Megapixel

How much do you need megapixels? Do you still think that a good camera is a high megapixel camera?

If your need is for photo prints, of course this high megapixel camera is very much needed.

But if you just like taking pictures, then the camera megapixels that are too high will only make your storage media (memory) wasteful.

Megapixel is a measure of the length times the width of the photo.

For example, a 24-megapixel camera will have a photo dimension of about 6000px x 4000px.

6000 x 4000 = 24,000 000px

Examples of some cameras with high megapixels.

If you are just a photo hobbyist, then 16 megapixels is enough. Using a camera that has high megapixels and then only needs to be seen on the website or Instagram is no big deal.

There are indeed advantages to cameras with high megapixels, such as

  • Photos can be cropped so they don’t break

Mirrorless or DSLR

The trend of mirrorless cameras is currently growing. You can choose a mirrorless or DSLR camera.

I’ve made the article on this blog as well.

The final word

Thus an explanation of the important points in upgrading the camera.

Hope it is useful.
