Review and How to Install Pop! OS

mrfdn – A few days ago I did the Pop! Linux OS on my computer.

Pop! OS is a distro derived from Debian. And became the operating system of the default computer System76, one of the companies in America.

So it can be equated Pop!OS can be aligned with the Windows and Apple Mac operating systems which both issue hardware with software bundles that have been set to run properly.

Besides that, I think changing the linux distro because I want good performance when running android applications with Flutter, Android Studio and Genymotion.

For that reason I want to taste the latest Pop!OS.

My hardware specs are still the same, namely Thinkpad X220.

Tips for installing Pop! OS

There are interesting things that I got during the Pop! OS, i.e. I have to resize the EFI partition to install the boot loader.

In default windows it is set automatically that the EFI partition will be set to 100mb only.

Whereas I know that this EFI partition is inviolable on my system.

Because if it’s just a little wrong, then my windows system will also be damaged.

First I canceled the Pos installation process! The OS then entered my windows 10 system, then installed Partition magic Minitool.

In me I edited the size of the efi partition which was initially only 100mb to around 700mb. This process requires restarting the computer.

Thank God it worked.

Continue to install Pop! OS, I restarted the installation process from the beginning and it ran until it was finished.

But alas, there is no windows option in the boot loader.
To enter windows, I have to hold F12 then select Windows boot loader. sob..

And if you are a programmer and gamer who has a laptop with a 15-inch full HD screen then a distribution can be the best alternative.

Review using Pop! Linux OS

I think Pop! os is another version of Gnome. It just feels different using the Gnome desktop environment here.

Window tilt

with tilting window

without window tilting

Pop!os feature that is very useful is window tilting, which makes every window that is opened on the screen will be displayed all without the need to minimize it.

To feel this feature with the maximum we must have a screen size of about 15 inches.

With the window tilting feature, it will be very useful for programmers who work with many windows, I feel for myself. 🙂

While my laptop screen is only 12.5 inches. So I think it’s not optimal for me.

Large font size

Plus the font size on the menu and window title looks quite large that can’t be resized. Which makes the screen feel narrower.

For some people maybe using a slightly large font size is not a problem, but not for me.

Totem Video player

Another feature is the default video player totem is very good. This video player is a default from gnome.

There is an option to watch almost all the latest movie trailers.

After installing Pop! os we have to run several commands to maximize its use. As ::

  • Install gstreamer for multimedia codecs
  • Install gnome extension

Pop Shop

In this Pop shop, we can install any Linux application we want.

There are 2 app source options given namely Flatpak or Snap (.deb).

Good nvidia driver tweak

Pop Distro! The os is set up by the System 76 company to run nvidia graphics properly. System 76 includes nvidia on the laptop it sells. So the performance of this laptop for playing games can be said to be very stable.

Conclusion

I haven’t used this distro for a long time because it just doesn’t feel right.

Pop Performance! OS as a linux distro is very good. Various facilities are provided.

This distribution is great for installing on a laptop with a 15-inch full HD screen, with 8 GB of RAM.

The minimalistic appearance of the gnome desktop makes it feel very beautiful.

But back to each other’s preferences.

Because choosing a linux distro is not based on what is best at the moment, but what is best for me to use.
