How to give a good photo title/caption so that your work is quickly found on Shutterstock
If so, consider one of these key factors, namely “naming”.
The better the way we name our work, the greater the chance to be found by potential buyers.
With that, the work that we are dying to make will not only be a display in our gallery.
What to know about naming uploaded files? Here’s the explanation.
This article comes from the results of my research around the world of mikcrostock, especially on the Shutterstock site.
1. For commercial photos
Arrange sentences in English so that they are at least 6 words. The six words contain what is in the photo.
Do not enter only known words.
If you don’t know how to compose sentences in English, use Google Translate. Type in Indonesian and then use the translated result as your photo caption.
Don’t have a typo or a typo, because it would confuse shutterstock curators to read it.
If there are words in Indonesian that cannot be translated, then arrange the sentences like this.
For example: you upload photos of onde-onde and klepon cakes.
Since the word doesn’t exist in English, just write it like this.
Indonesian traditional cake named dumplings and klepon
and the result of the translation will be like this
Indonesian traditional food called onde-onde and klepon.
I italicize the word called as a note that here we use the word for a word that does not exist in English.
In addition, the words onde-onde and klepon are also good keywords to use, because not many people take photos of the food. If the photos of your dumplings are better than those on shutterstock, then the chances of selling them will be greater.
2. For editorial photos
The format for writing captions for editorial photos can be done in 2 ways, namely:
- Place – photo date + explanation
- Explanation + place – photo date
For the date of the photo, write it in this format:
- Can with date (ddmmyyyy)
- Can only month and year (mmyyyy).
Example :
You get a photo of a person sweeping the street
So, put together a sentence about it and add the date+month+year.
So, the photo title can be made like this:
The street sweeper is cleaning the fallen leaves on the side of the road. Makassar, Indonesia – July 2021.
3. Choose the right word for the title / caption
This is a very important thing. Choose a word don’t just choose. Don’t use your opinion, but explain what you think needs to be explained.
My rules for choosing words for titles/captions are like this:
- Explanation of the incident
- Description of the object
Latin names of objects – e.g. latin names of flowers
If there is still space for words to be entered, please write them according to your wishes.
Remember, we are only given a maximum of 200 words for the author of the title/caption.
If necessary, just copy the title of the photo/work that is similar to the work you want to upload. But try to be better than that.
Before pressing submit,
- Think again, is the title what buyers are looking for?
Will shoppers type those words in a Shutterstock search?
That way you can know what to do.
4. The date on the editorial photo is written on the back
Especially for editorial photos, I prefer to write in this format:
Description + Place – photo date
example :
People in losari beach Makassar in the afternoon. Makassar, Indonesia – July 2021
The date format can also be made like this
- …. Makassar, Indonesia – 14 July 2021
- …. Makassar, Indonesia – July 2021
- …. Makassar, Indonesia – 07142021
I chose to put the date on the back.
Why?
Because if we look at the photo link that will appear on Shutterstock later, it will be the first 6 words of the photo caption that is made.
If the photo has been published, the link cannot be changed, even though we can change the title/caption. The link will remain the same.
I think this is an added value that will make photos more quickly found.
In order for photos to sell, we must make our photos appear faster in search.
And this thing
it can’t only be done by giving lots of keywords up to 50, but these keywords are included in our photo captions too.
5. Choose the right photo keywords
look, the title and the link are in the first 6 words right! |
In addition to,
use the first 6 words as keywords.
So hopefully the work that we upload to shutterstock sells quickly.
The final word
Those are tips for making photo, vector, video titles on shutterstock. Hope it is useful.
