God of War: Ragnarok Postponed Until 2022

God of War is an action-adventure game franchise created by David Jaffe at Sony’s Santa Monica Studio. Started in 2005 for the PS2 console, it has become the PlayStation flagship of eight games across multiple platforms.

Sony’s next God of War game was originally slated to release this year for the PlayStation 5, but recently the head of PlayStation Studio, Hermen Hulst and Santa Monica Studio confirmed that God of War will be delayed until 2022.

In an interview posted on the PlayStation Blog, Hulst said the 2021 God of War sequel was pushed to give Santa Monica Studio more time to develop the title.

“So, we currently have two very large and very narrative games in development: Horizon Forbidden West and the next God of War. And for both, they are frankly affected by access to capture performance and talent,” said Hulst.

“For Horizon, we think we’re on track to release this holiday season. But that’s not quite certain yet, and we’re working as hard as we can to confirm it to you as soon as possible.

And for God of War, the project started a little later. So we’ve made the decision to push that game into next year, to ensure that Santa Monica Studio can deliver the amazing God of War game we all want to play.”

In a post on Santa Monica Studio’s Twitter, they said, “We remain focused on delivering high-quality games while maintaining the safety and well-being of our team, creative partners and families. With this in mind, we have made the decision to shift our release schedule to 2022.”

Towards the end of the interview on the PlayStation Blog, Hulst quietly confirmed that God of War 2 is coming for PS4 and PS5. It’s unclear if the sequel will be a completely blue new generation release or a cross-gen release, but now it’s officially the last.

“Where it makes sense to develop titles for PS4 and PS5 — for Horizon Forbidden West, the next God of War, GT7 — we’ll continue to look at that,” said Hulst.
