Fortnite Mobile Android Version Officially Released on Google Play Store
After going through a very long journey, Epic Games finally gave up and registered the Mobile version of Fortnite to the Google Play Store on Android smartphones which you can download here. This difficult decision was taken after Epic Games was deadlocked regarding profit sharing for approximately 18 months. This is related to a 30% cut in revenue from every game listed on the Google Play Store.
This step was taken by Epic Games by being forced to save the ecosystem of one of their best online games on Android. The presence of the Mobile version of Fortnite is good news for gamers and an alternative to the battle royale game as well as disrupting the existence of PUBG Mobile and Free Fire which already existed.
Epic Had Refused to Release on Play Store
Epic Games actually released the Mobile version of Fortnite for Android 18 months ago, but they didn’t release it through the Google Play Store, but through their website and the Samsung Galaxy Store app. Epic Games reasoned that they wanted to build a direct relationship with their players.
However, there is another reason that is considered to be the main reason Epic Games had refused to release Fortnite PC on the Play Store. They consider the Google ecosystem to complicate the steps of developers by imposing a 30% discount on every game listed on the Play Store. This cut is considered too large and burdensome independent game developers in developing their applications.
This view is also what finally made Epic Games release the Epic Games Store as a challenger to the dominance of the Steam service which is considered unfair because it cuts developer income that is too large from every game sale on its service. This attitude had become controversial among gamers because Epic Games was accused of being too greedy by wanting to control all of their own income.
For now, Google still has the upper hand with this decision, but it looks like Epic Games is still upset about the decision. This can be seen from the comments of an Epic Games spokesperson who commented on this transaction in a slightly annoyed tone
“We hope that Google will revise its policies and business dealings in the near future, so that all developers are free to reach out and engage in commerce with customers on Android and on the Play Store through open services, including payment services, so that they can compete in the field., “
