3 DotA 2 Tournaments Canceled in 2021, What's Up?
The DotA 2 MOBA game is in mourning. In November 2021, the Dota 2 Pro Circuit international tournament calendar was confirmed to have one major event reduced in its schedule. The organizers of the Beyond the Summit (BTS) tournament have canceled the Major tournament it is managing.
Now this Steam game, in December 2021, is sad again because the Dota 2 Pro Circuit International tournament calendar is confirmed to be reduced again, namely 2 DotA 2 Minor tournaments. So, in total as of December 2021, there were 3 DotA 2 tournaments cancelled. Let’s see, any Dota 2 tournaments have been canceled.
Major Beyond the Summit
Beyond the Summit is an American shoutcasting studio based in Los Angeles. The company has been one of the organizers of the Major tournaments in the last year. Due to no funding agreement, as well as a partnership with Next Generation Esports (NGE), the Major tournament organized by the company was cancelled. NGE is the company responsible for Rocket League’s official eSports.
“Beyond the Summit is exploring the possibility of hosting a joint tournament with Next Generation Esports in March 2021. The tournament is part of the Dota 2 Pro Circuit. Unfortunately, his planning ended up with results that made no sense to us and the NGE. We couldn’t find a suitable financial model for NGE which would allow the event to be worthy of being labeled a Major,” said David “LD” Gorman.
The loss of The Summit as a Major tournament saw the total number of qualifying points for The International 8 (TI8) significantly reduced. The fact that there will be one Major lacking in the calendar will greatly affect the DotA 2 pro team’s path towards TI8.
Even though the Beyond the Summit tournament called The Summit will not be hosted on a major label, it will still continue as a DotA 2 Minor tournament on December 13, 2021. The Summit which was planned to be held in March 2021 will be replaced by the Major tournament which was originally scheduled for February 5, 2021.
Minor Global Esports Championships
The cancellation of The Summit as a Major tournament was followed by the cancellation of two Minor tournaments by the organizers of the Global Esports Championships. These two tournaments from the Global Esports Championships are scheduled to be held on 12 January 2021 in Singapore, and 2 March 2021 in Malaysia. The event has been canceled indefinitely. The cancellation of the two events in Singapore and Malaysia, has no impact on the other two Minor tournaments included in the GESC DotA 2 E-Series.
This cancellation was announced in early December 2021. The DotA 2 tournament was canceled via a brief statement from the Global Electronic Sports Championships on its official website. The details of the cancellation of the two tournaments were not mentioned in the announcement.
According to Valve’s rules, Minor tournaments must have a prize pool of at least $150,000 provided by the organizers in order to be included in the DotA 2 Pro Circuit tournament list. After that, Valve will add $150,000. Minor tournament points will be directly proportional to the prizes provided. With the minimum prize being $300,000, it means that there will be at least 300 points that can be distributed to the participating teams.
The loss of the GESC Minor tournament resulted in a loss of 600 points and a $600,000 prize pool for teams that had to participate in the Minor tournament. Tier 1 DotA 2 teams will certainly not be affected by the loss of the GESC Minor tournament. The affected teams are tier 2 and 3 teams, especially teams from the Southeast Asia region. The chances for these teams to earn cash and score points are reduced.
