It’s been a long time since Gears for Breakfast’s A Hat In Time games first released a playable demo and turned to Kickstarter for funding. Its debut was in May 2021. In order to get involved, players need to download the speedrun challenge from the game and show their efforts by streaming it on Twitch, posting your best clips once you’re done trying. So far, the event has been a huge success, with a large number of videos already submitted, and the top 100 can be viewed on Speedrun.com here.
Speedrunning Contest
When the contest is over, anyone who submits their trial recording will receive an in-game hat prize at game launch. The top 5 players will get a shiny gold version, and a free copy of the game will be given to Twitch followers at random.
The challenge itself shows the interesting gameplay of A Hat in Time. A truncated overworld-style short section, Mario-inspired obstacles, where you navigate a rotating block that floats freely through the sky, and culminates in a chase where you run past exploding trains all around you. It’s all nice to look at, and players love how free and fluid the game is, which is a great feature of the game.
A Hat In Time will be releasing on October 5th, and can be pre-ordered for $30 which gets you into a speedrunning contest via the developer site itself. The game will be available for purchase directly via Steam at launch, and coming to PS4 & Xbox One soon after.
