[Review] Resident Evil 3 Remake - No Longer 'Jill Sandwich'

Review using the PC version (Steam)

Resident Evil 3 Nemesis is a game Resident Evil The first one I finished and made me interested in trying other series. Until finally I declared myself to be a fan Resident Evil. Since knowing Capcom made a remake version for Resident Evil, makes me really can’t wait to play it. My impression when playing the demo was very pleasant even if only for a moment. Until finally Resident Evil 3 Remake was officially released on April 3, 2021. My dream to play this game again in the full remake format has been achieved.

Resident Evil 3 Remake still using the system with the previous remake version (Resident Evil 2). Capcom takes perspective over-the-shoulder, but players can still move even though they are in position Aim Down Sight. If you’ve ever played Dead Space, surely you will feel familiar with this kind of control. Resident Evil 3 Remake take timeline which coincides with Resident Evil 2 Remake, the player is placed in Raccoon City and had to get out of the city alive.

Here’s my review for Resident Evil 3 Remake.

Capcom really doesn’t forget the little things

Set in the city of Raccoon, which is experiencing unrest due to the virus that broke out, Capcom still succeeds in showing how RE Engine can provide near-perfect detail for players to enjoy. This detail gets even better when players manage to take full control of Jill Valentine. Like many cars that were destroyed in front of shops, fires that couldn’t stop extinguishing, to shops that were empty due to this virus. Even though you still can’t do anything to the existing environment (unless you really are required to do something), this will still make you stay careful of the sudden appearance of zombies.

Every room created by Capcom is worth it. In the first game, I did not find a room that could be considered ‘useless’. Somehow, Capcom added something to the room. Makes me want to go and see if the room contains anything interesting. And don’t forget, the color of the map will turn red if there are still items that can be taken.

Item Micromanagement also successful return to make Resident Evil 3 Remake like the horror games of its time. Your bag at first is very limited, so the placement of items here is very important and may make you have to come back again Safe Room just to pick up something important to be able to continue progress. In the first game, I almost never ran out of ammo. It’s not because of the number of bullets or Green Herb provided. But because there is no wasted room here. This is what makes me look all over the place provided until my map is all blue. As long as you’re careful, you won’t have any problems during the game. This usually indicates the game is a classic game Survival Horror Game (at least this is in my mind).

Where Clock Tower?

[Spoiler] Capcom changed the storyline a bit from Resident Evil 3 Remake. Personally, I feel a little disappointed (just a little). Capcom removed one of the scenes that I think is more epic than finishing this game. Yup, the scene in Clock Tower. However, Capcom also added something that could be considered sufficient to replace the omitted scenes. In fact, when a developer decides to ‘remake’ a game, you can’t expect that the game will be similar to the original version. Which means, everything in the game will be changed as a whole starting from 0 (zero). So no problem right?

Even so, Capcom is still making this game well even though it’s only been a year since its release Resident Evil 2 Remake. Capcom managed to provide a game that can be said to be full of action and challenges. Starting from being chased by Nemesis, to the scenes that turned out to be made much more tense than the PS1 version, namely being chased by Drain Deimos. Trust me when I say this, being chased by Drain Deimos will give you a bit of a heart workout as they are small, fast, and hard to get hold of. Perfect Dodge, so good luck to you.

Nemesis like the ex who can’t’move on’

Another thing that Capcom added was the gameplay as Carlos was apparently added. If you remember Resident Evil 3: Nemesis, definitely remember the scene when you have to move Carlos and don’t have many resources for you to be able to defeat all the existing enemies. And it’s back again in Resident Evil 3 Remake. Capcom doesn’t take away how hard it is to be Carlos. Because Jill needs everything in the game to be able to help her defeat Nemesis. Nemesis here is powerful, fast, and moves really like Superhuman.

It’s a shame indeed, Nemesis doesn’t show up as often as Mr. X di Resident Evil 2 Remake. Maybe this is due to the significant difference in their arsenal where Nemesis has a myriad of weapons that can make you wonder ‘how to beat him?‘. In the end, the further the game goes, you will no longer be chased by Nemesis as if you were still in Downtown Raccoon City. This makes the game a little less challenging when you’re just beating normal zombies (to be honest, I really like the adrenaline rush of being chased by Nemesis and Drain Deimos, and this is what makes me addicted to Horror games).

In Resident Evil 3 Remake there is no New Game+ Mode, but don’t worry because Capcom has prepared Challenge that you can do (such as destroying all Mr. Charlie) which later on each of these challenges will give you currency that can be exchanged for weapons, coins, or bags to help players ‘complete’ higher difficulty levels.

Conclusion

As RE2 Remake, RE3 Remake really makes me enjoy the series even more Resident Evil. Starting from the horror sensation, the tension when being chased by Nemesis, and also the ending that made me feel nostalgic. RE3 Remake there is not any Mercenaries Fashion, but Capcom added an extra level of difficulty that could make my WFH time less boring. Even though finishing RE3 Remake with higher difficulty, it gives you nothing but satisfaction (not even unlockable costumes). If only all remakes could be this good, I’m sure everyone would be a Capcom fan again. Here are some additional screenshots from my game.
