Operating system you won’t go through all the code in the file & try to figure it out if you want to open the file. Instead every time the program creates a file, it will be given extension behind the file name to tell the operating system what data is in it.

For example, if you try to Save as word file, so you will see various file extension when you click Save As Type. Once you’ve made a choice as to what to save the file as, Word will add extension behind the file name so that operating system know to use Word. (.docx)

When you open the file, operating system will check again the file type based on what has been installed on the operating system. You can see the list extension in windows 10 settings, then you can also modify extension which can be opened by installed programs.

To check it on Windows 10, you have to do the following steps.

  1. open settings
  2. Apps Tab > Default Apps
  3. Choose default app by file type

Please note, Windows also has many default programs to open extension when Windows is installed. For example, Windows can automatically find out using “Photos” to open extension .jpg not using “Groove Music”.

File Extension also useful if you find files on the Internet, but the owner of the file does not provide extension or wrong give extensions.

For example if you find notepad filed, but when you download the file does not have extension at all, then you just add it .TXT to open the notepad file.

To view or replace file extension, then you can uncheck “Hide extensions for known file types” on options folder in Windows 10. This is also useful when you download a file on the internet that you don’t know is safe or not.
