Working on Warcraft Mobile Game, Activision Targets New Game COD Release in 4th Quarter 2021
GAMEFINITY.ID, Jakarta – Activision Blizzard announced that several free-to-play Warcraft mobile games are in development. During its financial presentation on Thursday (4/2/2021), Activision Blizzard also announced plans to launch a new premium Call of Duty game in the fourth quarter of 2021, while saying Overwatch 2 and Diablo 4 won’t launch until at least 2022.
“We intend to deliver premium content more frequently to maintain and expand the World of Warcraft community. We’ve created several mobile and free-to-play Warcraft experiences, and are now in the further development of the beloved intellectual property of our franchise,” said CEO Bobby Kotick.
Activision calls World of Warcraft a slick combination of classic and modern games. In November 2021, Blizzard released World of Warcraft’s eighth expansion, Shadowlands, which sold 3.7 million units on its first day of global sales. This figure also broke the record for the fastest PC game sales, until finally Cyberpunk 2077, which was released on December 10, beat that record with sales of 4.72 million on its inaugural day.
“This will create opportunities for existing players and new fans to experience the Warcraft universe in a whole new way.”
Activision Blizzard also announced plans to release another “premium” Call of Duty game in the fourth quarter of 2021. It is not yet clear which studio will make the next entry in the COD series, as a number of Activision studios have rotated to develop the game, including Infinity Ward, Treyarch, and Sledgehammer Games.
Activision Blizzard claims the Call of Duty franchise has generated 27 billion USD in lifetime sales since its launch in 2003. That figure makes it one of the most successful entertainment franchises of all time.
Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick also said Call of Duty attracted more than 250 million players in 2021, up from 70 million in 2021. Black Ops Cold War was the best-selling game of 2021 in the United States, followed by Modern Warfare, marking its twentieth year. 12 consecutive Call of Duty games are ranked No.1, according to market research firm NPD Group.
