Titled Welcome to Raccoon City, the New Resident Evil Movie is Not Related to the Previous Film Franchise

GAMEFINITY.ID, Jakarta – The upcoming live action film of the Resident Evil game adaptation will be officially titled “Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City”. This was revealed by the director Johannes Roberts in the SXSW online event.

Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City is an adaptation of the first two Resident Evil games and will include the main characters from both games, including Chris and Claire Redfield, Jill Valentine, and Leon S. Kennedy.

Set in 1998, Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City will tell the story of what happened when the city was surrounded by infected zombies. Several places that become the background of the game, such as the Spencer Mansion, the Police Station to Raccoon City itself will be featured in the film.

As is known, previously Resident has been appointed to six films directed by Paul WS Anderson and starring Mila Jovovich. Although it is still being produced by Constantin Film, who also worked on the previous film franchise, Roberts said Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City will not be related to its predecessor RE film.

“This is a separate origin story based on the roots of the (video game series) and the horror world. We don’t remake. We’re heading in a completely different direction,” Roberts said.

As a big fan of John Carpenter, Roberts said this film was inspired by several other legendary films such as Assault on Precinct 13 and The Fog. To kick off this new Resident Evil cinematic universe, director Johannes Roberts claims the film will be scarier than previous RE films.

“The most important thing about this film is the tone. The thing I love about these games is that they are very scary and that’s what I want. We have two very separate locations, one of which is siege movie style with a police station, and then you have a spooky mansion.”

The film has announced who the star will be playing the lead role. Among them are Kaya Scodelario as Claire Redfield, Robbie Amell as Chris Redfield, Hannah John-Kamen as Jill Valentine, Avan Jogia as Leon S. Kennedy, and Tom Hopper as Albert Wesker.

For your information, Netflix is also working on a CGI animation project Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness, and a live-action Resident Evil TV spin-off starring the “Wesker kids”.
