The Last of Us Series Will Take Some Dialogue Straight From The Game
GAMEFINITY.ID, Jakarta – Sony is developing three films and seven TV series based on PlayStation games. One of the newly announced is The Last of Us. The creative director behind The Last of Us, Neill Druckmann has explained how the upcoming HBO series is a direct adaptation of the game’s content, including some dialogue taken directly from the game.
However, Druckmann said the series would not retell the events of the game, and some episodes would even be “grossly distorted”.
The Last of Us adaptation is set to be the first television series from PlayStation Productions, a studio formed by Sony Interactive Entertainment to adapt original game properties for film and TV. Last month, Game of Thrones actors Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey were officially cast as the main characters Joel and Ellie.
Speaking during the SXSW interview, the game’s director and executive producer Neil Druckmann, explained how he and showrunner Craig Mazin adapted the game.
“We talked at length, that the first season of the series will be the first game (Part I). The philosophical basis of the story is the most important element that must be adapted properly,” said Neil Druckmann, quoted from IGN.
Druckmann said viewers will likely recognize some of the dialogue from the game, but also recognize some of the significant changes to the story that are introduced.
“It’s funny to see my lines from the game now appear in the HBO script. And sometimes they stray far to a much better effect because we’re dealing with different media.”
“HBO very well encouraged us to move away from hardcore action and focus more on the drama of the characters. Some of my favorite episodes so far deviate greatly from the story, and I can’t wait for people to see them. ”
Mazin, previously known for his work Chernobyl, is co-writer and executive producing the TV adaptation of Last of Us, with Naughty Dog vice president, Neil Druckmann. Carolyn Strauss (Game of Thrones, Chernobyl) is also executive producer along with Naughty Dog president, Evan Wells.
