Tencent cancels Arena of Valor World Cup

The Arena of Valor World Cup (AWC) is the latest addition to a long list of events canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Tencent said this decision was taken to prioritize the health and safety of all parties involved in the tournament.

The Chinese company also assured that they had considered all possibilities before making such a tough decision.

“In response to the global issue of the Covid-19 pandemic, it is with a heavy heart that we announce that AWC 2021 is cancelled,” said Tencent.

The Covid-19 pandemic has had a direct impact on several international esports events that cannot be held online due to connection problems. Like other esports games, Arena of Valor has also prepared plans to adapt to current conditions. Tencent said that more information about the plan will be announced in the near future.

AWC is one of the biggest Arena of Valor tournaments that brings together the strongest teams in the world to compete to carry the name of their respective countries. The first AWC event took place in July 2021 in the United States with a total prize pool of US$550,000.

The second edition of the AWC was held in July 2021, where defending champions South Korea had to fall in the group stage, and Vietnam managed to become champions after a narrow win over Taiwan in the final. The match recorded a peak attendance of 764,358.
