Switch and Call of Duty topped US Game Sales Record for 2021
GAMEFINITY.ID, Jakarta – Gamers in the United States spent record totals on video game hardware, content and accessories in 2021. This is according to market research firm NPD Group. Total sales tracked by the company reached 56.9 billion USD last year (approximately IDR 801.8 trillion), 27 percent more when compared to 2021.
December 2021 spending on hardware, content and accessories also hit a record 7.7 billion USD (approximately IDR 108.5 trillion), 25 percent more than the previous year. The Switch was the best-selling hardware platform in units and dollars in December and 2021 overall. Annual sales (in dollars) the Switch only lost to the Nintendo Wii in 2008. After breaking record sales of hardware launches in the US in November 2021, the PS5 is the second best-selling console of the year in dollar sales, while the PS4 is the second best-selling console by units sold. .

Released in 2021, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is the second highest-grossing game of 2021, ahead of Animal Crossing New Horizons (digital sales not included), Madden NFL 21, and Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. Animal Crossing New Horizons still breaks the record for the highest physical sales for a Nintendo-published game in a calendar year since the 2010 launch of the Wii Fit Plus.

The Last of Us Part II, the sixth highest-grossing game of 2021 overall, is now the third-highest-grossing game by publisher Sony in US history (in dollar sales), behind only Marvel’s Spider-Man and 2021’s God of War.
