Netflix Working on New 3D Sonic the Hedgehog Animated Series
GAMEFINITY.ID, Jakarta – Netflix has announced that it will be working on a new 3D Sonic the Hedgehog animated series. Titled Sonic Prime, the 24-episode series will premiere in 2022.
The series is said to be about a “high-octane adventure in which the fate of a strange new multiverse” will be in Sonic’s hands, as well as a “journey of self-discovery and redemption”.
Canadian production company WildBrain will animate the series in a Vancouver studio, with showrunner Sonic Prime and executive producer from Man of Action Entertainment (Ben 10, Big Hero 6). Publisher Sega previously promised to mark Sonic’s 30th anniversary this year with the release of a new game, as well as a number of other big announcements.
As reported by the Video Games Chronicle, on Monday the company claimed more than 1.14 billion units of Sonic games have been sold and downloaded since the series debuted in 1991. Sonic Team Leader Takashi Iizuka announced at SXSW Gaming 2021 that production of the next Sonic the Hedgehog title ongoing.
Paramount Pictures also plans to release Sonic the Hedgehog 2 in theaters in 2022. The first Sonic The Hedgehog film was a record success for a video game adaptation, grossing nearly $320 million in theaters worldwide.
The February 2021 release is the sixth highest-grossing film of 2021, according to Box Office Mojo. This live action film stars Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic, James Marsden (Tom) and legendary comedian Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik.
