Sony Stops Selling Movies and TV Content on PlayStation Store Starting August 31

GAMEFINITY.ID, Jakarta – Sony Interactive Entertainment on Tuesday (2/3/2021) confirmed that the PlayStation Store will stop offering TV and movie content for purchase or rent. Starting August 31, 2021, video content will no longer be available through digital storefronts. However, existing purchases are still accessible.

In a statement published on the PlayStation website, SIE’s head of Video Business Vanessa Lee said the decision was driven by the growth of streaming services on PS4 and PS5.

“At SIE, we strive to provide the best entertainment experience for PlayStation fans, and that means evolving our offerings as customer needs change,” Lee wrote.

“We have seen tremendous growth of PlayStation fans using subscription-based and ad-based entertainment streaming services on our consoles. With this change in customer behavior, we’ve decided to no longer offer movie and TV purchases and rentals through the PlayStation Store starting August 31, 2021.”

Once these changes take effect, users will still be able to access movie and TV content they’ve purchased through the PlayStation Store for on-demand playback on their PS4, PS5, and mobile devices.

“We thank our fans for their continued support. We look forward to further enhancing the entertainment experience on PlayStation.”

The plethora of streaming services currently available on PS4 and PS5 are Netflix, Disney+, Apple TV, and others.
