Sony says the transition from PS4 to PS5 will take 3 years

GAMEFINITY.ID, Jakarta – Ahead of the launch of the next generation console PlayStation 5 on Thursday (11/12/2021), Sony is committed to continuing to satisfy users of the current generation console, the PlayStation 4 which is claimed to have more than 110 million gamers. For this reason, several new games that were originally released for PS5 will also be released for PS4.

In an interview with AV Watch as quoted from Video Games Chronicle, Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Senior Vice President and Platform Planning & Management, Hideaki Nishino said the transition period between PS4 to PS5 could take up to three years. During this period, Sony wants as many games as possible to be played on both platforms, aka cross generation.

“In terms of compatibility, it is important to move PS4 games to PS5, but I insist that forward compatibility (supplying the same games for PS5 to PS4) is important. The current assumption is that the transition from PS4 to PS5 will take about three years. In the meantime, how can I continue to buy games on PS4? Can purchased games be played on PS5? That’s an important thing to pay attention to.”

In September, Sony confirmed that several games previously thought to be exclusive to the PS5 would also be released for the PS4. Some of them are Marvel’s Spider-Man Miles Morales and Sackboy: A Big Adventure which will be released on November 12, to coincide with the PS5 launch schedule. Likewise, Horizon Forbidden West is scheduled for release in the second half of next year.

Several PS5 games that are planned to be released in 2021 include Gran Turismo 7 and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart (first semester), as well as the next God of War series which does not yet have a release schedule. There is no confirmation yet whether these games will also be released for PS4 in the future.

Hideaki Nishino said, even though the PS5 is a future console that promises a lot of potential, Sony can’t just leave PS4 gamers behind.

“In fact, it may not be easy to develop PS5-specific development from day one. In the meantime, PS4 development is also needed. It’s not a PlayStation unless you’re setting up a system that developers can use for a few years, so I think there’s great potential in the future for the PS5. After a certain amount of time, we asked developers to develop a PS4 and PS5 ‘cross-generation’ premise.”
