Prevent Crowds, Sony Eliminates Direct Sales in Stores During PS5 Launch

GAMEFINITY.ID, Jakarta – Sony has confirmed that all sales of the PlayStation 5 at launch next week will only take place online. Thus there are no PS5 units available in offline retail stores. In a statement published on Thursday (11/5/2021) quoted from IGN, SIE communications boss Sid Shuman said that measures had been put in place to keep customers and retailers safe amid the re-escalation of COVID-19 cases.

It’s not explicitly explained in which regions Sony will implement the policy, but the message is shared by regional companies in the United States and Europe where COVID-19 cases are indeed on the rise.

“In order to keep our gamers, retailers and staff safe amid COVID-19, we confirmed today that all-day sales will be made through our retail partner’s online stores. No units will be available in stores for purchase on launch day (November 12 or November 19, depending on your region). Please don’t plan on staying overnight or lining up at your local retailer on launch day hoping to find a PS5 Console for purchase. Be safe, stay home and order online.”

Buyers who have pre-ordered can pick up orders at local retail stores at the specified time, under the COVID-19 health protocol implemented by each retailer. This policy was immediately agreed by several retailers in the US and Europe, such as Best Buy which said it would not sell PS5 or Xbox Series X/S consoles until the end of this year. Likewise, Walmart has opened a special schedule for online purchases.

The standard edition PS5 (with disk drive) is priced at USD500 or around Rp. ). As for the digital edition, the PS5 is marketed at a price of USD400 or around Rp.5.72 million in the US region and EUR400 or around Rp.6.76 million in the European region.
