Not Sony or Nintendo, now Google and Amazon will be Microsoft's competitors

In this holiday season, two new consoles will be launched, namely the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. The launch of these consoles also extends the trend of console competition between Sony and Microsoft.

The rivalry between the two companies began in the early 2000s with the original PlayStation 2 and Xbox as participants. Then Nintendo’s exit from the home console competition in 2006 further strengthened the competitive tension between Sony and Microsoft.

But it seems Microsoft will withdraw from its competition with Sony which has been running for more than a decade. This is because the steps taken by Microsoft in recent years have suggested that they will shift to a new strategy.

“We’re focused on enabling our customers to play whatever games they like, whenever and wherever,” Xbox head Phil Spencer told Business Insider in June last year.

It’s clear Microsoft has been planning to bring Xbox games to everyone since last year, including those who don’t own the latest console. The fact that all games released by Microsoft studios over the next two years will be playable on Xbox One also strengthens Spencer’s statement.

“All of our content over the next two years, including games, will adopt a PC system where older consoles can play the latest games,” Xbox Game Studios director Matt Booty told reporters. MCV earlier this year.

It can be concluded that Microsoft will turn to the world of Cloud Gaming to compete with Google and Amazon. Google has already launched its Cloud Gaming service called Google Stadia, while Amazon is reportedly developing Cloud Gaming under the name Project Tempo. Given that Amazon already has an adequate cloud infrastructure with Amazon Web Services, it is not impossible that Project Tempo will soon become a reality.

“When it comes to Sony and Nintendo, we really respect them. But right now we see Google and Amazon as the main competitors for the foreseeable future,” Phil Spencer told Protocol last February.

Microsoft’s move is a brilliant strategy that allows everyone to play Xbox games, whether they have the latest console or not. As long as they use an Xbox console, all Xbox games will be available.

It seems that in the next few years, the gaming trend will shift from consoles to Cloud Gaming.
