New PS5 Launches in China in Second Quarter 2021

GAMEFINITY.ID, Jakarta – Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) will launch PlayStation 5 in China in the second quarter of 2021. The launch plan was announced by SIE Shanghai president Tatsuo Eguchi and Vice Chairman Soeda Takehito in a video. Sony’s next-generation console was originally approved for sale in China in December 2021.

“The version launched in Q2 2021 will be the official Mainland China version. It will likely be an online region lock service when it launches. Currently, players in China are importing consoles from overseas markets such as Japan and the US,” said Daniel Ahmad, senior analyst at market research firm Niko Partners.

Sony previously targeted to ship more than 14.8 million PS5 consoles over the next fiscal year, despite the constraints caused by a global semiconductor shortage. It’s unclear how many units Sony will ship for the PS5’s China launch.

Nintendo and its local partner, Tencent, launched the Switch in China in December 2021. By January 2021, one million Switch units had shipped, although Niko Partners estimates that around four million Switch consoles have been sold in China, considering illegal sales in the gray market.

According to Niko’s data, the lift is better than sales of PS4 (3.52 million) and Xbox One (1.24 million). PS5 launched in November 2021 in the US, Europe, Japan, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, and South Korea. While the PS5 was released in Indonesia last January, and India in February 2021.

Sony claims there has been an “unprecedented” number of requests from consumers for the PS5, which is considered the “biggest console launch of all time”.
