Indonesian Society's Interest in Games Increases 60% During the Pandemic

GAMEFINITY.ID, Jakarta – In recent years, gaming and esports globally and in Asia have grown rapidly. Indonesia is a Southeast Asian country with a game market
potential. Based on data compiled from Newzoo in 2021, Indonesia currently earns $1.74 billion in revenue, and an increase of 32.7% annually.

The increasing number of internet and mobile internet users is one of the reasons why the esports industry in Indonesia will continue to grow in the future. In addition, another reason the industry will still develop in Indonesia is because smartphone hardware is becoming more and more capable and internet access is expanding. Based on 2021 data, 68% of global mobile esports revenue comes from Asia and Indonesia is the top ranking in Southeast Asia for mobile gamers.

“Esports has existed in Indonesia for the past 20 years, but unfortunately it was still in the form of a community and the ecosystem had not yet developed. Esports in Indonesia is increasingly popular, the proliferation of mainstream media broadcasting news or about esports tournaments gives an indication that esports is accepted by the Indonesian people. Our own media traffic increased by 60% during the pandemic, meaning that their interest in games increased because this moment was used by them to accelerate their gaming skills while at home. The development of esports itself in Indonesia certainly cannot be separated from the role of the industry ecosystem itself, be it game developers, players, stakeholders, especially the government.” Said Rangga Danu as VP Kincir and Co-Founder of IESPL at the ‘Leverage Esports to Grow Your Business’ Webinar last Wednesday.

Support from the government such as the Ministry of Youth and Sports (Kemenpora), the Ministry of Communication and Information (Kemenkominfo) and the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy (Kemenparekraf) the Creative Economy Agency (Bekraf) also contributed to its development.

“Kemenparekraf is trying to develop esports industry communities by encouraging the formation of an ideal ecosystem to support the development of the national game industry. The more national gamers and game developers, Indonesia will grow into a competitive ecosystem.”

However, to continue to maintain the growth of the national game, multi-sectoral roles are needed, from the government to the supporting ecosystem.

“I welcome the revival of the Indonesian economy, which was spearheaded by the esports ecosystem. Let’s together hand in hand encourage collaboration and restore the economy so that Indonesia can continue to advance,” added Sandiaga Uno, Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy of Indonesia.

BCA as a financial institution that has many regulations, has participated in the esports industry since 2021.

“BCA as a financial institution sees the esports ecosystem growing in a positive direction. When we participate in this industry the program gets more than 10 million views on social media. This figure shows that the esports industry is in great demand by the Indonesian people and we really want to be an institution that is always relevant to the needs of the community. Esports is our choice to continue to gain the trust of young people. We hope that our religious initiations can continue to grow.” said Mr. Armand Hartano, Vice President Director of BCA.
