In First Two Months, Sony Ships 4.5 Million PlayStation 5 Consoles

GAMEFINITY.ID, Jakarta – Sony revealed that it shipped 4.5 million PlayStation 5 units worldwide in the first two months of its console’s global release since November 10. The Japanese company recently revealed in a publication along with its latest earnings report.

The figure highlights Sony’s current ability to mass-produce the console, which has been extremely difficult to buy since its launch in November. Quoted from The Verge, Thursday (4/2/2021) PlayStation 4 demand fell drastically from year to year, with 1.4 million units shipped in the October to December quarter, down 77 percent from the previous year. The figure is also smaller than in the July to September quarter.

Overall, however, Sony’s gaming business performed much better than the previous year, with analyst Daniel Ahmad noting that the October-December quarter was the best quarter in PlayStation history. Revenue increased 40 percent to 883.2 billion yen (approximately Rp. 117.7 trillion), driven in part by sales of the PS5.

Operating profit rose 50 percent to 80.2 billion yen (around Rp. 10.7 trillion) thanks to increased game sales, PlayStation Plus subscriptions and better margins on PS4 hardware. Sony noted the costs associated with launching the PS5 were balanced against the profits, and also confirmed that the PS5 hardware itself is selling for less than it cost to build.

The loss occurred because “the strategic price point for the PS5 hardware was set to be lower than the cost of production,” Sony said. Apart from that, the PS5’s sales volume was actually the same as the PS4, which also shipped 4.5 million units in its launch quarter.

Unlike the global release in November, Sony’s next generation console was only sold in Indonesia starting January 22 last. However, not all enthusiasts can directly buy the latest console in the store. This is because the PS5 stock in the country has been sold out.

Meanwhile, Microsoft did not release specific sales figures for the Xbox Series X or Series S. However, the company said Xbox hardware revenue was up 86 percent year-on-year.
